In 2018, Ariana Grande notoriously sang that she only wanted to walk down the aisle one time; however, her seventh album tells the story of her recent divorce.
“Eternal Sunshine” came out March 8 — Grande’s first music release in nearly four years.
The album is a mature take on Grande’s infamous pop-girl sound, taking listeners through the steps of grief and rebuilding that came with her divorce from Dalton Gomez and finding herself and love again.
The 13-song album spans over 35 minutes and, if nothing else, lets listeners learn more about Grande’s growth as a person and a songwriter.
The album title is from the 2004 film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”
In the film, a couple undergoes a procedure to erase their minds of each other and their past relationship.
Jim Carey stars in the film, significantly different from the comedic roles he’s known for.
Similarly, this album feels like a new direction for Grande.
This album has fewer potential pop radio hits than her previous work.
Listening to this album is an emotional experience rather than fun, casual listening.
It opens with an interlude track, “Intro (end of the world),” followed by a song titled “bye,” which exposes listeners to the raw, lonely and confusing emotions that Grande was experiencing towards the end of her marriage.
The very first lyrics we hear on the album pose a question: “How can I tell if I’m in the right relationship?”
The following song tells us her decision was ultimately to leave with the upbeat, potential breakup anthem “bye.”
The song “don’t wanna break up again” paints a picture of how she felt lonely and broken but did not want to end things again.
She refers to her marriage as a “situationship” in this song.
Lyrically, this is one of the best songs the album has to offer.
It tells the story she’s trying to share well, but it’s not one that will end up on everyone’s playlist.
There’s also a common theme of astrology throughout the album.
The track, “Saturn Returns Interlude,” contains a recording of astrologer Diana Garland talking about the Saturn Return — when Saturn is aligned in the same place as when you were born. This phenomenon usually happens during the late 20s to early 30s and supposedly disrupts one’s life.
The songs “supernatural” and “true story” are very Ariana Grande-style songs with her strong vocals and a catchy beat that are easy listens.
The title track “eternal sunshine” is not a love-at-first-listen song.
The lyrics are powerful and create a correlation between the film, which it got its name from, and Grande’s own experiences and feelings. In the song, just like the film, Grande sings that she wants to wipe her mind and forget the relationship rather than know what could’ve happened if it worked out.
After dissecting the meaning of the song — that her past relationship is one that hurt her and she wishes she could just forget, but they are both moving on — it is a much more enjoyable listen with some fun vocals that make it catchier after each listen.
The song “the boy is mine” is 2000s-inspired and is the most empowering girlboss song on the album, comparable to some of her biggest hits like “thank u, next” and “7 rings”.
The leading single for the album “yes, and?” came out Jan. 12 and gave us absolutely no insight into the album.
The song is upbeat and has proven to be a great song to dance to, thanks to TikTok.
Compared with the other 12 songs on the album, it doesn’t deliver the same heartbreaking, marriage-ending vibe and feels out of place.
It has the traditional Ariana Grande radio sound but definitely stands out from the rest of the album.
The final four songs on the album end on a melancholy note and are some of the strongest songs lyrically.
Grande has previously released some emotional songs, specifically on her albums “Thank U, Next,” “Sweetener” and “i wish i hated you.”
The song “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” is arguably one of, if not the best, song on the album and is already proving to be a fan favorite.
It’s received more streams than any other from the album — aside from the single “yes, and?” — and Grande also announced this song will be getting a music video.
Grande expresses the feeling of finding new love in “imperfect for you” and “ordinary things.”
Her Nonna is featured on “ordinary things” and can be heard offering advice about being in a healthy relationship.
Her words offer an answer to the opening question of the album. “You’re in the wrong place. Get out,” Nonna said.
