Sonic’s Blackout Slush Float is the perfect sweet treat to celebrate the eclipse festivities, and despite popular belief, it won’t leave your teeth looking as dark as the eclipse.
Before tasting the slush float, the drink stuns with its space-inspired visual theme.
A blue-black slush with cotton candy and dragon fruit flavoring engulfs a dollop of soft serve, all topped with purple, blue and silver star-and-moon-shaped sprinkles.
As a bonus, the drink even comes with a novelty pair of eclipse glasses that can be used for viewing parties April 8.
With the first sip of the slush float, the fruity sweetness of the slush hits immediately.
While the flavor was good and tasted familiar, it was hard to distinguish the combination without further researching what “blackout slush flavor” means.
Further, while the drink was enjoyable, the best audience would likely be a younger audience who would not shy away from the sweetness nor be as perturbed by the incredibly hard sprinkles.
The ice cream was the saving grace of the sweet acidity of the slush.
After mixing the slush and ice cream, the drink was most enjoyable, which created a lovely visual effect, making the black slush transform into swirls of purple and pink hues much like a galaxy.
Additionally, this mixing benefits the overall balance of the drink.
The drink also benefits from Sonic’s decision to make it a slush float and not a regular float, as the slush allows for easier mixing and also provides an improved textural experience of floats as a whole.
Besides the enjoyable dessert experience that the drink provides, consumers might be surprised that the heavily dyed drink will not leave the teeth or tongue stained as expected.
In summary, while the slush float was not life-changing and would be most suitable for a younger audience, it is still an enjoyable novelty dessert that one can drink to commemorate the eclipse.
Sonic is also just one of many brands that have used the eclipse to come out with a limited-time food item that consumers could pair with their eclipse celebrations.
Blue Moon, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, Krispy Kreme, Lesser Evil, Oreo, Perfect Bar, Smoothie King, Snapple, Sun Chips, Torani and Applebee’s all had their takes on creating new eclipse-inspired foods for consumers to try.
The slush float will remain available until May 5, giving ample time to try out how the slush pairs with all the other eclipse-themed foods that have been released.
