One way Starbucks has distinguished itself from other brands is by crafting coffees and drinks to fit your cravings for upcoming holidays.
With the advent of autumn, you can expect fall flavors to make it into your coffee fixes, like the corporation’s pumpkin spice latte.
The same occurs about two months later when Santa comes to town; at that time, you can finally find your favorite holiday drinks on the menu, one of them being the peppermint mocha. Starbucks has crafted a collection of drinks to fit every big holiday except Halloween, until this year.
On Oct. 22, Starbucks released two drinks — Elphaba’s cold brew and Glinda’s pink potion.
The two beverages were inspired by the upcoming musical “Wicked,” more specifically, its two most prominent characters, the wicked witch, Elphaba, and her adversary Glinda.
The drinks made their official debut just one month before the movie is set to premiere in theaters Nov. 22.
Although not inspired by Halloween, both drinks carry spooky undertones, leaving customers the perfect opportunity to settle in for the holiday with a treat — or a trick.
Elphaba’s cold brew was definitely a trick.
The creation is Starbucks’s signature cold brew sweetened with peppermint syrup and topped with a nondairy matcha cold foam.
The corporation’s website says the coffee is to be dusted at the top with candy sprinkles, which would have elevated its presentation, but, presentation is not what caused the drink to fall.
In fact, the appearance of the drink held a perfect design.
The cold brew settled at the bottom and the matcha cold foam on top gives the drink a dark brown look intercepted by an almost unsettling green, successfully allowing it to match both the vibes of the film and Halloween.
The taste of the drink too closely resembled the character it was named after — Elphaba. It was horrifically bitter.
The pumps of peppermint syrup were nowhere to be found in the cold brew, leaving nothing to taste but a severely unsweetened, coarse coffee.
Because the matcha was natural, it retained an unsweetened taste as well.
The entire cup of joe was bitter and sharp just like the Wicked Witch of the West and left no room for reprieve.
The appearance and mentioned flavors of Elphaba’s cold brew lead customers to believe it would be more than it is, but fortunately, Glinda’s pink potion’s bark matches her bite.
The drink is a remix of Starbucks’ mango dragon fruit refresher, bringing flavors of sweet mango and dragon fruit blended with creamy coconut milk and finished with real dragon fruit pieces and non-dairy strawberry cold foam.
Unlike Elphaba’s cold brew, Glinda’s pink potion was not overpowering.
Each flavor complemented one another, creating a harmonious blend rather than a cup of battling savors.
The coconut milk sunk beneath the fruit beautifully, leaving a taste of creamy fruit flavors you will never forget.
The blend, combined with the cubed ice, refreshed and cooled, much like Glinda.
Both drinks effortlessly match the characters they are inspired by, so before diving in to try, make sure you know who you are going for this season — the good witch or the bad.
