Senator Molly Austin motioned for the University of Central Arkansas Student Government Association to allocate $4,250 to fulfill the SGA portion of CubConnect’s Anthology annual contract during its Oct. 7 meeting.
SGA agreed to pay $4,250 yearly to help cover the payment for systems allowing students to use card swipe tools.
The motion was passed unanimously.
SGA had a second motion by Austin to allocate $5,089.49 to acquire new computers for the SGA executive office, all funds to be garnered from the SGA reserves.
Austin said the current computers are not performing up to standard.
During the summer, the SGA picked out computers that would best replace the outdated computers in the executive office.
The motion passed, with only senator Chance Steward abstaining.
SGA President Phoenix Vu announced that the HPER Center will be renamed the Thomas C. Courtway Student Recreation Center after UCA’s tenth president.
Kevin Carter, associate vice president of facilities, discussed several projects at UCA.
One project, Burdick Hall, is undergoing renovations and is expected to be completed by August 2025.
Another project is the announcement that trees in high-traffic areas like the Ronnie Williams Student Center may be cut down due to their age for safety reasons.
Carter said many of the trees being cut are oak trees that are beginning to die.
These trees were planted for UCA students who died during World War Two.
Carter said, “Of course, we hate to cut down trees out here. That’s what makes this campus so beautiful, all the old trees we have, but many of these trees have a lifespan, like everything else.”
Carter said there are plans to plant more trees to replace those that were cut.
