An MIT physics professor, Sarita, who struggles with severe narcolepsy becomes increasingly suspicious and paranoid when rapper P-Mac, who has a criminal history, moves in next door to her in BET+’s new movie “Wake.”
The movie stars Shoniqua Shandai as Sarita, J. Alphonse Nicholson as P-Mac, Parker McKenna Posey as Bryn, and DeRay Davis as Eddie.
The movie is a must-watch for those who enjoy thrillers. “Wake” will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The plot was the best part of the film. It differed from other movies in the genre.
Too often, thrillers follow the same storyline of an obsessed desperate stalker harassing a successful single woman.
“Wake” takes a completely different take on thrillers, with a narcoleptic professor who often hallucinates and cannot distinguish if her neighbor is truly dangerous, or if she’s imagining it.
The creepy hallucination scenes added an extra layer of suspense and thrill to the film.
Besides the plot, the casting director did a great job.
I am a huge fan of J. Alphonse Nicholson’s work and loved his role as Lil Murda in STARZ’s hit series “P-Valley.” It was great to see him on the big screen again. This role as P-Mac was similar to that of Lil Murda, being that both characters were rappers. But, Alphonse Nicholson is such a dynamic actor, he managed to make it two completely different performances.
Parker McKenna Posey was another familiar face, as she is most known for being a child star in the early 2000s series “My Wife and Kids.” It’s cool to see her reemerge into acting and take on more mature roles.
Comedian DeRay Davis added a needed comedic relief to the chilling film. His character, Eddie, incorperated humor to the intense scenes.
There was a seemingly large budget for this movie as it featured large luxury homes and flashy vehicles.
These elements took away from the fashion, hair and makeup. The beauty department lacked for this movie.
The movie follows a professor, nurse, and rapper but in some parts, the fashion and makeup don’t match the lifestyles of the characters.
Sarita’s hair and wardrobe in particular could have been stronger and enhanced her character even more.
Overall, this movie is worth watching, especially with everyone searching for a scary movie to indulge in during the spooky season.
Wake is now streaming exclusively on BET+.
