Adam Sandler and his family hold the title for Netflix’s No. 1 movie this week with their film “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” which premiered Aug. 25.
The film is a coming-of-age story about two best friends, Stacy Friedman (Sunny Sandler) and Lydia Rodriguez Katz (Samantha Lorraine) who are planning their extravagant bat mitzvah parties, until the popular guy at school, Andy Goldfarb (Dylan Hoffman) creates a wedge between the two.
I would recommend the movie to audiences who enjoy lighthearted comedy movies or young romantic comedies.
The movie reminded me of other popular Netflix films, such as “The Kissing Booth,” “To All The Boys I Loved Before” and “Sierra Burgess is a Loser.”
If you’re interested in films of that genre, you would definitely enjoy watching this one.
There were a few things this movie did well.
First, there were age-appropriate actors and actresses cast for the roles. There are so many movies and TV shows where actors in their 20s and 30s are playing characters in grade school, which makes it unrealistic.
It gives the younger audience a false sense of reality, leading them to compare themselves and mimic adults. This film used actual young people and creatives, which I thought was an excellent representation of the younger generation.
Alongside using young actors, the hair and makeup throughout the movie were also appropriate for middle schoolers. The characters expressed themselves through colored hair, pigtails, Converse sneakers and jewelry that represented middle school fashion in the perfect way.
I appreciated how this movie showed young girls that friendships are forever and that boys and middle school drama are temporary.
As a young woman growing up, there are so many movies and shows based on love. This movie had those elements but ultimately, friendship prevailed as the theme.
Even though I enjoyed the movie, there were two things that I wish were better, considering it was geared toward the younger generation.
For the movie to be based in a Hebrew middle school, there was a lot of swearing and inappropriate jokes that were not needed. In no way, shape or form did it add to the movie’s plot or characters’ personalities. It could have left out unnecessary swearing.
Elements like this lead critics to slam the movie online and leave negative reviews. Many of them said it wasn’t an accurate representation of Jewish culture and that it made a mockery.
As a non-Jewish person, I cannot attest to the representation in the film, but I don’t condone mockery of any religion.
In true Adam Sandler fashion, some of those elements like the swearing and dirty jokes were reminiscent of his other films, such as “Grown Ups” and “Blended.”
Overall, the movie was cute, and left me in tears at the ending scene. It taught young women valuable lessons about friendships and boys.
“You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah” is streaming now on Netflix.
