“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” is better than the second movie but worse than the first.
If you like movies with a mild case of vulgar humor, then this is the movie for you, but most jokes go over your head if you haven’t seen the first two movies.
The plot is quite simple, as the family goes to Greece for a reunion they were invited to, where Gus Portokalos (Michael Constantine), Toula’s father, grew up. He left his journal and a task for Toula to find his old friends. Despite this movie being mostly about the reunion, there is still a small scene with a wedding.
Nia Vardalos, who starred in the film as Toula, wrote and directed “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.”
Based on the trailer, the movie gives a similar vibe to “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again,” which is also set in Greece.
Beyond location, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” finds common ground with “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” with the plot point of a family dealing with the death of a parent while reconnecting with their roots.
In “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again,” Sophie’s mom, Donna Sheridan, died the year prior. Sophie takes over her mom’s hotel on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi to try to restore it.
In “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” Toula’s father Gus Portokalos died the year prior, and they go to his village on an island in Greece to reconnect to their roots.
The casting in this movie is almost the same as all the previous movies, the only difference is the extras. Nia Vardalos (Toula), John Corbett (Ian), Joey Fatone (Angelo), Elena Kampouris (Paris), Andrea Martin (Aunt Voula), Gia Carides (Nikki), Lainie Kazan (Maria), Louis Mandylor (Nick), Maria Vacratsis (Theia Freida) and Stavroula Logothettis (Athena) all star in this film and its two forerunners.
The soundtrack takes on a more modern aspect of Greek dance music. In the first two movies, the music was mostly traditional Greek music featuring instruments such as bouzouki, laouto, lyra, and tzouras.
In this movie, club versions of Greek dance music sound similar to American songs. An example is “Telika (Club Mix)” by Konstantinos Argiro.
Despite the classification of the movie being a romantic comedy, it lacks a lot of the romance aspect.
Compared with the previous two movies, the romance scenes were lackluster. In this installment, there are a few small kisses here and there, but nothing like the full-blown make-out scenes in the first movie.
The first two movies are streaming on Max, if you want to watch them before seeing this movie to get all the references.
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” is in theaters now and grossed $9.5 million in ticket sales in its opening weekend.
