Selena Gomez shut down rumors over who her latest single “Single Soon” is about after fans mistook the line “And the weekend’s almost here” to be about her ex-boyfriend Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd.
Gomez returned to the music scene after a three-year hiatus, if you don’t count her single “My Mind & Me” released in 2022 for her Apple TV documentary by the same name.
Her newest single is admittedly fun, carefree and an earworm perfect for the end of summer — a much-needed break from the important, but somber content of the “My Mind & Me” song and documentary.
The drama came after Hollywood Life, a celebrity news account, posted a 2017 picture of Selena and Abel with the caption, “In case you missed it, #SelenaGomez released her newest song, ‘Single Soon’ earlier this week! Her fans believe that it is about her romance with #TheWeeknd. What do you think?”
Well, Selena certainly told them what she thought, commenting “Couldn’t be more false.”
The root of the speculation was a poorly placed lyric about waiting for the weekend … you know — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — not waiting around Tesfaye.
Drama aside, Gomez delivered exactly what she had promised fans. Just days before it dropped she wrote on Instagram, “Y’all have been asking for new music for a while. Since I’m not quite done with SG3, I wanted to put out a fun little song I wrote a while back that’s perfect for the end of summer.”
If you’re noticing a trend with Instagram, I can’t help but point out she is the most-followed woman on the social media app, with 428 million followers.
The single’s runtime is only 2:53, but it’s packed with fun lyrics to sing during a sunny drive in your car when you need a little pick-me-up. Just as the title states, Gomez wants to be single soon so she can have fun and let loose.
She sings, “I know he’ll be a mess / When I break the news / But I’ll be single soon … I’ma date who I wanna / Stay out late if I wanna.”
The lyrics and vibe of the song are super cheeky — perfect for when you want to break it off with someone but you don’t really have a good reason to give them; “Might not give a reason why (Oh well) / We both had a lot of fun / Time to find another one / Blame it all on feelin’ young.”
The intro to the accompanying music video includes an audio recording of Gomez’s little sister saying, “Hi I love you sissy, never worry about boyfriends — at all,” as Gomez leaves a breakup Post-it note on an Xbox controller sitting on a coffee table. The note, as they always do, says, “I’m sorry, I can’t, don’t hate me.”
Next we see Gomez getting ready and eventually sitting alone at a restaurant with a big cheesy smile on her face as she watches the surrounding couples. Her smile only grows when her friends arrive at her table. The rest of the video is what you’d expect: selfies in a limo, bar karaoke, clubbing and jumping into a pool in your party dress — a fun girl’s night that tops any boring date night.
After the raw and unfiltered version fans got to see of her in “My Mind & Me,” it was refreshing to see her so happy and carefree.
“Single Soon” is out now on all streaming platforms, but no word yet on Gomez’s upcoming album.
