Senior computer science and math major Meaghan Dellar was awarded the 2008 Intern of the year.
Dellar visited Namibia in Southern Africa through the World Teach program where she worked on technology developments in a small village.
Dellar taught computer classes to the locals and installed computers. She also did various activities in the community like coach soccer.
Dellar was nominated for the award by her internship adviser and computer science department chairwoman Chenyi Hu.
“I nominated Dellar because overall she is a good student and a wonderful role model to students in the computer science department as well as students on UCA campus. She maintains a 4.0 but most importantly she uses her knowledge in computer science to help improve the lives of others,” Hu said.
Dellar received various grants and funds for the trip to Africa.
Norbert Schedler, founder of the honors college and a philosophy professor, helped her find various grants and scholarships to attend her internship.
When Dellar was informed that she received the award, she said she was honored.
“I never thought about the award during or after my internship; I was there to learn more about the work which I will be doing in the future,” Dellar said.
Dellar said the honors college and her award will benefit her in the future.
“This award and internship has helped open my eyes to new activities that deal with computer science,” Dellar said. “It also has focus on what to do my graduated work on.”
