What is up with the news media today? When I turn on the television to catch a glimpse of what is going on in the world I see either celebrity gossip or the new presidential election. I understand that the election is important to the world but how did entertainers, better known as celebrities, become news? You would think that humans getting kidnapped, like Megan Williams, and students on trial for attempted murder, like the Jena Six, would be the main stories.

The Jena Six did not get coverage until months after the incident took place. The black community had to bring it to the mediaÕs attention so the world could see what was going on. However, hours after Brittney Spears shaved her head it was all over the world.

Sometimes I wonder what is going on in the producersÕ and editorsÕ minds. When I was growing up, news was about what was going on in the world so the human race could be informed, which is what encouraged me further my education in journalism. Now itÕs a big scandal magazine.

So let me fill you in with what the news outlets are too afraid to cover. Can you picture what you were doing Sept. 12? Well, Megan Williams was being rescued by a deputy from a trailer from West Virginia.

Williams was allegedly tortured and raped for an entire week by a white family ranging from the ages of 20 to 49: Karen Burton, 46, Alisha Burton, 22, Danny Combus, 20, Frankie Brewster, 49, Bobby Brewster, 24, and George Messer, 27.

Williams was forced to lick blood, drink from a toilet and eat rat and dog feces. According to criminal complaints filed in the county, Williams was stabbed in the left leg, choked with cords, beaten and had parts of her hair torn from her scalp.

The police received a tip and went to the house. When they arrived they talked to a woman on the porch. As they were talking, a female limped toward the door with her arms up, saying Òhelp me.Ó The six were charged with kidnapping, assault, malicious wounding and battery.

To make this incident worse, the whole family has previous records ranging from murder to theft. Many people have been killed or wounded in the same house as Williams.

This is a story that should be placed on the front page of a newspaper or reported on a news station. I discovered this on Facebook, not a news station or a newspaper. This is the state of the world we live in today.
