As Halloween approaches, people are starting to get into the spooky spirit by scaring themselves silly at a haunted house. I am one of those people.
If you’re a Conway native then you may know that Creepy Works, a haunted house off of Dave Ward, has been making people scream for several years now.
Creepy Works has been frightening the people of Conway since 2010 and this year was no different. Located underneath a bright white sign that read “Haunted House,” the old wooden building next to a corn field made for a scary setting.
While approaching the building and the ticket booth, I could hear a chainsaw with screams following soon after. There was no wait to get inside and the tickets were only $13, which is really good for a broke college kid like myself.
Stepping into a dimly lit room, my friend and I came upon our first monster. It was a creepy looking clown that beckoned us to keep going. The beginning started out somewhat slow and there weren’t too many scarers jumping out.
About three minutes in, the pace steadily picked up and we were thoroughly scared. When I go to a haunted house, I like to talk to all the monsters and creatures that come my way, usually in a frightened voice. Every time a person dressed up as a creepy little girl asks me “want to play?” I always run away yelling, “no thanks!”
At some point in the Creepy Works tour, I was screaming so much I couldn’t even get any words out. The fact that it was two girls going into a haunted house by themselves probably didn’t help either. We were both terrified of each person that came around the corner, feeding into each other’s fear the entire time.
There weren’t many displays or props, which was disappointing. I always love to see the props that go into a haunted house and all the horrific scenes that they create, but Creepy Works didn’t provide that. There were a few rooms with good props but I would say they were decent at best.
They did, however, make up in part with their truly horrifying costumes and makeup. Each actor did a great job of being scary and menacing. My favorite room was towards the very end, where a woman sits in an old chair, dressed sort of like a zombie.
She was sitting in the chair with fog swirling around her and as we walked past, she sat and stared. When we were almost to the exit of that room, she stomped over to us and began asking us to stay with her in a voice that sounded possessed. We were creeped out and screaming our heads off as we ran through the exit.
At the end, there was, of course, a man with a chainsaw to frighten us enough to make us run back to the car. My friend was so frightened that she ran through the corn field just to avoid him.
Sitting in the car, our heart rates dropping back to normal, we conversed about how scary the experience was. I’ve been to many haunted houses over the years, but Creepy Works impressed me.
The props and displays were coherent with the price of admissions but the actors were great. To rate it out of five stars, I would give it a four based on their lack of production.
