College is all about discovering who you are, what you’re passionate about and how you want to change the world in some way. This entire process starts with choosing a major and minor. Declaring a major or minor can really be a scary thing, primarily because your degree choice might determine your career path for the rest of your life.
Ever since sophomore year of high school, I was positive that English was the subject that I was best at and most passionate about. Coming to college, though, and being introduced to new and interesting fields made me doubt myself for a long time. But here’s the good news: it’s okay to be unsure of your college major.
Yes, it is good to doubt your major or minor. This means that you care about your future, and may be passionate about more than just one thing. This is why college is the perfect place for exploring what you love to do in life.
Be sure to ask yourself what you look for in a major. It is so important that whatever you study makes you happy, and this is different for everyone. While one person may have a knack for accounting, someone else may be more passionate about fil and another person may want to study to be the best nurse they can be.
Everybody is so incredibly different. It is unfair to judge people on what they look forward to studying and what they do not. All people will never fit under the same category, and that is the reason that colleges offer such a wide range of majors and minors. There are so many welcoming departments and organizations to become a part of.
College, regardless of what field you study, will be challenging at times. You will break down from being overwhelmed and overloaded at least once or twice during your college career. This is normal, in fact. When things get too out of hand, though, it might be beneficial to take a class in a different subject, or join a new club.
Joining new clubs and taking different kinds of courses help expand your knowledge, and give you a little insight into what other majors or minors might have to offer.
I was a teaching minor when I first came to UCA. Eventually, I started having doubts and knew that teaching was not for me. After looking into foreign language classes offered here, it inspired me to try something new, so I changed my minor once again to Chinese.
Unfortunately, I was not good at learning the language, and picked up more responsibilities than I could carry. After a lot of contemplation and self-searching, I realized this wasn’t right for me. Journalism and writing for the paper had always caught my interest, so I decided to take a few courses, and now I am officially a journalism minor.
The point is, it is completely okay and normal to be unsure of where you might end up. At ony point, almost everyone couldn’t confidently say they knew for sure that their choice of major or minor would not change over the course of four years.
There is an entire world of courses, subjects and extracurricular activities to be passionate about. You’ll get where you need to be going. In the meantime, you are exactly where you’re supposed to be.
