Organizations and clubs are so much more than going to a meeting every week or picking up a snack at a presentation you attend. Being a part of a campus organization means more than just saying you’re in it and not doing the work. These groups welcome growth, diversity and valuable skills for the future. My college experience has drastically improved since I made the choice to join an organization at UCA.
I know an equal amount of people who are and who are not involved in any sort of club or organization in college. Many people I know, such as myself, were too busy to join a club when classes initially began. For some, it can still be a lot of work to juggle classes and outside commitments, but the benefits make it beyond worth it.
Many people underestimate the amount of self-growth and acceptance that occurs at the college age. During this time, people learn more about themselves, their life goals and their strengths and weaknesses. Since other students of diverse backgrounds will be there with you along the way, you are able to see how others from other backgrounds handle situations. Finding out how to stay organized and focused is another form of acceptance that is vital to college students.
Soft skills, also referred to as people skills, are abilities that some do not have coming into college or the workforce. They include communication, attitudes towards others, and how efficiently you can handle work and interaction with coworkers. These are vital skills to have throughout college, and also in the workforce.
Being able to use talents and strengths in clubs is something that helps mine, and other people’s confidence. Joining a club that is related to your major, minor, or simply something you are interested in can have a positive effect on your attitude, and even the mindset toward doing what you love. I feel so much more connected to my major and minor when I attend events, or when I’m apart of clubs related to them.
Getting involved in organizations also helps you become a part of the campus life, which can be difficult otherwise. This can lead to networking and connections that can help during school, or even later in life. I have already met so many people I would not have met walking to class, mainly because schedules can be so different. I have gained lifelong friends and great opportunities.
A really exciting thing, for me at least, is being able to add a new line to my resume. Clubs and organizations can help you gain life experience that you really can’t find anywhere else. This is why college organizations are so unique and beneficial.
Most importantly, you will have the time of your life. Being able to meet people who are interested in the same things as you can teach you so much. There are people that I have never seen outside of the clubs I’m in, and I am so grateful to have been able to meet them. Building friendships for me was especially difficult in college because I was a new kid from three hours away. After becoming involved, I can’t seem to walk across campus without seeing a familiar face.
UCA is home to 200 organizations and activities that help students become connected and involved on campus. Being involved not only helps us as students, but it also helps us grow as people, as well as a community.
