On Jan. 30, Hendrix College students held a protest against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the pedestrian bridge on Harkrider street. The protest began at 3 p.m. and ended at 5 p.m. It was planned on top of the pedestrian bridge, where oncoming traffic could see the students holding their personalized signs.
Students shouted chants like “No Justice! No Peace!” and signs read “No One’s Illegal on Stolen Land.” The pedestrian bridge is used by Hendrix students, but it is not owned by Hendrix. Due to conflict of ownership, Hendrix staff had to tell students to move their protest off the bridge.
The students continued their protest in between the Student Life Technology Center and the Dawkins Welcome Center. Cars would drive past the students and blow their horns to either show their favoring to the protest or opposition to it. A few cars gestured with their middle fingers as they drove past the crowd of students.
Despite 20-degree weather, students remained determined to continue their protest. The protest was organized on Instagram by an anonymous source. This follows after a wave of anti-ICE student protests across central Arkansas.
