Louis Tomlinson’s latest album is a new channel for his solo career, one that works well with his abilities as an artist.
The album has a nice “summer” feel to it, feeling like it should have been released later into the year during the warmer months.
Tomlinson’s third solo album – eighth album total – was released on Friday, January 23. The album, called “How Did I Get Here?” has 12 total tracks and only takes about 37 minutes to listen through.
The first track and lead single on the album “Lemonade” is upbeat and has a lively tempo.
The next track “On Fire” carries the upbeatness from “Lemonade” but incorporates more synth and really highlights Tomlinson’s vocals.
Following that, “Sunflowers” has a nice opening to it, it does slow down the tempo compared to the past two tracks and really highlights this new sound that Tomlinson is going for.
This song really stood out, and it is notable as the second longest song on the album.
Track four is “Lazy” and it features a new side of Tomlinson’s voice and has a lot of fun vocal effects and layerings.
Tomlinson kept the backing instrumentals simple for this one, it’s a shame that this is the shortest song featured on the album.
“Palaces” is the fifth song on the album and was the second single that Tomlinson released in preparation for this album. It brings the tempo back up and features really interesting layering of the vocals and instrumentation, having the beat line up exactly with the vocals at certain points. “Palaces” also features an incredible bridge.
The next track “Last Night” is one of the best songs, lyrically, on this album. It slowed the tempo back down. It has a lovely chorus and incredible vocals by Tomlinson. Towards the end of this song there is a moment where the guitar has a really cool effect on it.
“Broken Bones” is the seventh track on the album and it features a really incredible guitar solo. This felt more pop rock than the rest of the album up to this point. There was a really interesting binaural effect on this song in certain parts.
“Dark To Light” is the eighth track on the album and is a tribute to Tomlinson’s former band mate Liam Payne.
The two were members of One Direction along with Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik. Payne passed away in 2024.
The song features heartfelt lyrics and a melancholy instrumentation. Tomlinson’s vocals truly shine in this song.
“Imposter” is next, and it was the third single Tomlinson released.
It brings the tempo back up following the previous heartfelt song. “Imposter” brings listeners back to the summer vibes with fun vocals and interesting instrumentals.
The next track on the album is “Sanity” and it features an intriguing opening and incredible backing vocals that play off of and layer well with the main vocals.
“Jump The Gun” is the eleventh track on this album and, unlike what you might expect, it advises listeners to not jump the gun.
It features great vocals much like the rest of the album and Tomlinson once again delivers with the instrumentation.
“Lucid” is the last track on the album and brings the tempo of the album back down and is chill compared to the rest of the album.
It features the lyrics “How did I get here?” in its bridge and layers the lyrics with the chorus following the bridge.
This was the longest song on the album, feeling like a proper way to close out the album for Tomlinson.
