Torreyson Library renovations have brought a more student friendly and technical vibe for UCA students.
Renovations started in fall 2012. Beginning with the first floor, construction was focused on flooring. From carpet to new sound absorbing and wood finish, the flooring was finished in spring 2013.
Last year, students complained about poor internet access in the library, Torreyson Library Director Art Lichtenstein said.
Wireless access has been updated to a faster, easier connection.
The staff is working on 15 more study rooms for the library, including some that have room for up to 10 students.
Comfortable, cushioned chairs, as well as couches and lounging areas have replaced the old wooden chairs. The tables in the library are equipped with screens that can be set up around a student to have more privacy.
“We want students to walk into the library and feel like we care about their education,” Lichtenstein said. “The library still had some touches of the 1960s and it needed a new technological feel. Now students can look up books from their home computers and find information that they could do just as well as if they were in the library. My vision for this renovation is that it has emphasis on academics and people will feel welcomed.”
Torreyson Library has expanded its first floor hours last semester.
It is open all night to students who show their ID cards. Students will be safe at night, with new security cameras and a staff worker that welcomes them at the door, Lichtenstein said.
The expansion of the hours started late last semester.
The library has added new outlets with different types of adapters connected to them so students can charge their phones and computers.
“Last year I felt as though I didn’t have any space and any privacy,” sophmore Rebekah Johnson said. “When I come into the library now, I feel like I want to study and do homework.”
Johnson said the overall environment in the library has improved a lot.
She said she is excited about the white board walls that will be included in the new study rooms.
“That way, my study group and I can figure out equations and problems on a spread out area,” Johnson said.
The renovations to the library are expected to be finished this mid fall semester.
