The movie Lightyear, produced by Walt Disney Studio, came out in theaters on June 17th of this year. The main protagonists are Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans) and Izzy Hawthorne (voiced by KeKe Palmer). Lightyear is a spin-off based upon the story behind Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger, who is also a main character from the movie series Toy Story.
The movie starts off with Buzz on a different planet with another space ranger and commander named Alisha Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Adub), when suddenly they are attacked by alien creatures.
Buzz and Alisha attempt to fly out of the planet back to Earth, but then Buzz ends up crashing the spaceship and causing damage to the vessel, forcing the crew to stay for repair.
Flash-forward to a year later, a new hyperspace fuel has been created and Buzz volunteered to test it out.
A test that was only supposed to last four minutes was instead lasting four years when Buzz came back from space due to the cause of him traveling at a high speed.
As he continues to try and succeed with the fuel, 62 years have passed and Alisha and his fellow crew members are gone and Buzz was introduced to a new commander named Commander Burnside.
Burnside informed Buzz that the crew decided to stay on a new planet. Buzz goes against his idea and proceeds to travel through space with the hyper fuel and the mission ends up being successful.
When he returns, he discovers that another 22 years have passed by and the planet is invaded with Zyclops robots controlled by Emperor Zurg.
After seeing this movie, overall I would say it’s a funny, lighthearted, kid-friendly movie.
There were many moments where the movie made some references with the franchise, which was very nostalgic and heartwarming.
Without giving too much away, my only problem I had with this movie is the ending.
It was unexpected and after everything that the movie made me go through, what was it all for?
As an adult who was worried if it would be too “cheesy” for me, I thought it was age appropriate for me as well.
The makers of this movie targeted the right audience which is from five to late 20-year-olds.
In terms of pricing, of course it depends on which movie theater you go to since they all vary depending on where you live.
I went on a discount day (which is on Tuesdays) at my local movie theater. Normally it would have cost me $7.50 but on discount day, it only cost me $5.75.
It was a pretty good deal to me. For it being a kid movie, there were a fair amount of adults around my age and older watching it with me as well, so you don’t feel out of place with it.
So, if you enjoyed watching Toy Story growing up, I would recommend Lightyear to you.
