College is already a lot, and sometimes it feels like it’s all about going to class, doing assignments, and trying not to fall behind. However, there’s way more to college than just academics. One thing I’ve learned is that getting involved in extracurricular activities makes the whole college experience so much better. Whether it’s joining a club, volunteering, playing a sport, having a job or just showing up to campus events, there’s a lot of value in stepping outside of the classroom.
First off, extracurriculars are a great way to figure out what you’re interested in. You might join a club just for fun and end up finding something you’re really passionate about. It’s also a chance to develop personally. You gain confidence, learn how to work with different types of people and build skills that’ll help later on in life even if you don’t realize it right away. Leadership, communication and teamwork really do matter.
Another big thing is that it helps with your resume. When employers or grad schools look at your experience, they’re not just looking at your GPA. They want to see that you were involved in other things and that you know how to balance your time. Being a part of something outside of class shows that you can handle responsibilities, take initiative and be a team player.
Time management is another skill you pick up from juggling school and extracurriculars. When you have meetings, events or practices along with classes and homework, you learn how to prioritize and get organized. It can feel like a lot sometimes, but it teaches you how to handle busy schedules, which is something you’ll deal with way after college too.
It’s just good for your mental health. College gets stressful and sometimes you need a break from studying. Being part of a group or doing something fun or meaningful can give you that break. Whether it’s a hobby, a cause you care about or just hanging out with people who share your interests, it gives you a reason to look forward to something besides schoolwork.
Also, joining things on campus helps you feel more connected. College can feel really lonely at times, especially when you’re new or don’t know a lot of people. Getting involved helps you meet others, make friends, and feel like you’re part of something. Some of my best college memories have come from clubs or late-night events that I wouldn’t have gone to if I just stuck to my usual routine.
I think every college student should try to get involved in something outside of class. It doesn’t have to be anything big, it just needs to be something that makes you feel good, helps you grow, and makes college more than just homework and lectures. You’ll get a lot out of it, and it really does make the experience more worth it.
