An altercation turned extreme in the Student Success Center parking lot when gunshots were fired, leaving one student injured and two suspects identified April 19.
The student, an unidentified bystander, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was rushed to a Conway Regional Medical Center, UCA police said.
The student, a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, was released a few hours later and is in stable condition, police said.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:08 a.m. in the Student Success Center parking lot at the Donaghey and Bruce intersection, police said.
Gunfire was exchanged between two vehicles across the parking lot.
No other injuries have been reported at this time.
The suspects are not believed to be either current or former UCA students.
One of the suspects is in custody and the other has been identified by UCA police.
On that note, UCA President Houston Davis said “We will be pulling leadership across campus functions into an evaluation of the safety and security protocol as it applies to the presence of anyone that is not a student, faculty or staff member or is not a visitor to campus with official business or attending a sanctioned event.”
With the Fifth Avenue park shooting still in the rear-view mirror and the Florida State University shooting only a day earlier, concerns over gun violence remain high.
“We know that this incident and other campus shootings nationally in recent days and weeks have given us all a sense of anxiety and concern regarding college campus safety,” UCA said in a statement. “This is a troubling pattern, and we understand and share that sentiment.”
SGA president Phoenix Vu said about the incident, “It is more important now than ever that we stand together and support one another.”
Davis said “We are proud of and thankful for the student life and social experiences that tie our community together, but we cannot allow outside actors with zero regard for our organizations, departments, and the university to bring chaos and selfishness to the place that we value and that many of us call home.”
UCA police say the shooting appears to be an isolated incident. They are not releasing the names of either suspects as the investigation remains active.
