This year, the Grammy’s were very upsetting.
Friends I watched the Grammys with can attest that I was unhappy with some of the wins and think the Recording Academy was biased this year.
First, let’s start on a positive note.
I was very excited to watch another Black woman win best rap album.
Doechii deserved that win. Her album was monumental for rap this year.
I have been listening to it on repeat for weeks now after her song, “DENIAL IS A RIVER,” became very popular on TikTok.
This was a win for Black women all over the world.
Next, best pop vocal album.
I was very excited to witness Sabrina Carpenter win her first Grammy after performing her songs, “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” on stage this year.
Her album, “Short n’ Sweet,” was a very important album for me.
It meant the world to me to watch her win and see how far she has come.
Her sex-positive album has helped young women become more comfortable in their skin, which I feel is something that the world needs to experience.
Lastly, best new artist was awarded to Chappell Roan.
I have found comfort in her music since she became popular.
She is an amazing artist and performer.
She deserved that win.
Her music has been a huge comfort for the queer community, and I am glad that she is finally being noticed for her incredible talent.
Now, let’s talk about Kendrick Lamar.
Lamar walked away with five wins for “Not Like Us.” He won categories such as record of the year and song of the year. I would still consider this a positive thing, but I was just completely shocked that he won. If some aren’t aware, “Not Like Us,” is a diss track against Drake. The premise of this song is essentially calling Drake a pedophile. I think this win was deserved, but I just think that it’s crazy and a little funny that a diss track won both of these awards.
Finally, let’s talk about why I am disappointed with the Grammys this year. In a word, Beyonce. Beyonce won both best country album and album of the year.
No surprise, I am upset.
First, her winning best country album is insane.
She was up against Chris Stapleton, who I believe had the best country album of the year and is actually a country artist. I listened to “Cowboy Carter” and no way this was considered the best country album.
I am not an avid country music listener, but you can’t just sing a song about Texas and call it country music.
Lastly, the big one is album of the year.
“The Tortured Poets Department,” was one of Swift’s best albums yet.
She didn’t win a single award, which already made me angry, but for “Cowboy Carter,” to win, let’s just say I was livid.
This may be mean, but did anyone actually listen to “Cowboy Carter,” or was it just hyped up because Beyonce put it out?
