You should travel more.
Even a short trip to a nearby town can offer a refreshing change of scenery, new experiences and the opportunity to immerse yourself in a different local culture and lifestyle that may feel worlds apart from what you usually experience.
Each town, state and country has its own story — a quirky local tradition, a famous historical site or a café on a quiet street. These experiences are not just about fun; they also broaden your perspective on diversity beyond your social bubble.
One of the challenges of traveling is the cost. Traveling, especially abroad, can be expensive due to transportation and lodging fees. However, there are different ways to make traveling more affordable. Planning ahead of vacations, looking for deals on flights and accommodations, traveling during off-peak seasons and exploring closer-to-home destinations can all help reduce costs.
One of my favorite things about traveling is the food. Exploring the local food is a great way to gain an understanding of the area you are visiting.
The cuisine represents the region’s culture, history and customs. Tasting the local dishes can help you better understand the people and their lifestyles.
Foods in countries like Austria are very hearty meat dishes for the harsh winters. On the other hand, in maritime countries like England and Italy, the food features a lot of fish and foreign ingredients like curry or tomatoes.
Traveling allows you to find new foods and helps broaden your palate, introducing you to flavors, ingredients and cooking styles you can bring home and share with friends and family.
When I traveled to Italy in 2018, I was able to try a lot of authentic foods and new foods that I would not have known before. Squid ink and cuttlefish spaghetti is one of these meals that sound bad in name, but once you try it, it is eye-opening to the food, one you would not be able to eat in your hometown.
Travel is a gateway to personal growth, exposing us to different cultures and traditions. Rather than through a book, we learn to embrace and understand similarities and differences through authentic encounters.
Exploring new places teaches us about humanity and gives us an appreciation, understanding and respect for different points of view and ways of life that everyone has.
At UCA, students pursuing their degrees can study abroad through the university’s study abroad program. This program allows students to spend a semester in another country while continuing to work towards their degree. Such programs are valuable as they enable students to experience other cultures and see the world.
Traveling is not just about learning but also about relaxing and escaping your responsibilities back home.
There is no pressure to stick to a schedule or meet a deadline. Whether you want to spend the day lounging by the pool, wandering through unfamiliar streets or simply enjoying a long, leisurely meal at a local restaurant, traveling allows you to be as productive or as relaxed as you desire.
Traveling was a great way for me to relax without much worry. I was able to see new things and experience history and culture without having to read a long textbook.
Vacations also provide the opportunity to spend time with loved ones, explore new places and engage in activities we enjoy, which can all contribute to happiness and fulfillment.
So, whether it is to a town thirty minutes, an hour or a whole day’s drive away, traveling more will help build your character and knowledge and allow you to enjoy the life you are living.
