What seemed to be a heartfelt tale about two sisters who shared a love for a pop star turns into a dark, psychological horror thriller in Amazon Prime’s new series “Swarm.”
“Swarm” follows the life of an overzealous fan — Dre, played by Dom Fishback — whose love for fictional artist Ni’Jah, played by Nirine S. Brown, leads her down a violent path.
At the beginning of the series, Dre and her sister Marissa, played by Chloe Bailey, make a promise that one of them will meet Ni’Jah. Dre goes to great lengths to make this promise come true.
The show also stars other big names such as Damson Idris as Khalid, Marissa’s boyfriend; Billie Eilish as Eva; and Paris Jackson as Halsey.
Donald Glover and Janine Nabers created the show, and Malia Obama co-wrote. Glover and Nabers are most known for creating the hit show “Atlanta.”
Some elements of “Swarm” are reminiscent of “Atlanta,” but the creators did a great job at creating a different show and vibe.
“Swarm” is a must-watch, especially for those in fandoms. It details some of the not-so-favorable parts of fandom culture and how dangerous parasocial relationships can be.
Beyoncé fans will have an interest in this show. Before each episode, there’s a disclaimer that says “This is not a work of fiction. Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is intentional.”
As you watch “Swarm” it is obvious they are referencing Beyoncé. The fictional pop star Ni’Jah calls her fans the beehive and they refer to her as “Queen Bee.”
Just as Beyoncé calls her fans, the Bey-hive and they refer to her as “Queen Bey.” There were also other elements throughout the show that reveal heavy inspiration from actual events that happened to Beyoncé and her fan base.
“Swarm” nailed it in the horror category. It was scary to think that there were real fans that had gone to similar extremes that Dre does in the series.
Fishback did a stellar job as Dre. There were parts in the series where Dre genuinely scared me and I forgot she was a fictional character.
Another element that I liked was Eilish as Eva, a cult leader that Dre crosses paths with on her way to a Ni’Jah concert.
Eilish did an impressive job as Eva, this role being her acting debut. Eilish’s performance added a deeper element of thriller to the series.
The soundtrack of the series was pretty good as well. Each song fit the scenes perfectly and enhanced the experience for viewers. It was apparent that the songs were made for the series.
The soundtrack features Ni’Jah, KIRBY and Childish Gambino and is now available to stream on all major music platforms.
“Swarm” is streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime.
