In a universe filled to the brim with epic battles and superhero sagas, “I Am Groot” season two shines as a charming beacon of humor and joy-filled adventures.
The sequel is a collection of five bite-sized shorts, and with each short clocking in at around four minutes, the total run-time for season two is approximately 20 minutes. But sometimes less is more, and I can confidently say this is the case.
“I Am Groot” is a humorous continuation of the Disney+ series focusing on the adventures of everybody’s favorite space tree, Groot. Building on the first season’s success, this installment takes viewers on several mini-quests, ranging from first-time pet ownership to the troublesome twig gaining a new sense of smell, to Groot hunting for loose change so he can buy intergalactic ice cream.
Groot’s limited vocabulary initially seems like a restriction, since they solely focused this series on him, but the director of the series, Kirsten Lepore, along with the writing and animation team, masterfully crafted a way to use this to their advantage. Through Groot’s expressions and gestures, the show’s creators have found a recipe that viewers cannot get enough of.
The opening scene of this season exemplifies that “I Am Groot” is going to be visually stunning throughout. The storytelling jumps off the screen with vibrant colors and intricate animation.
It does not take long to realize the creators tailored these shorts more toward children than adults, similar to the first season. But with that being said, I still enjoyed these shorts.
They are extremely easy to watch, with the most extended episode running a whopping five minutes, including the credits. Lepore managed her time wisely and packed consistently funny content into these pint-sized episodes.
When watching movies or shows in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, the question often arises, “Do I need to watch this show/movie in a specific order for it to make sense?” The answer to this question is a resounding “no” for both seasons of “I Am Groot.”
Seasons one and two easily stand on their own, and although some prior knowledge of the MCU would not hurt, it is unnecessary.
But for the hardcore Marvel fans, “I Am Groot” contains a few Easter eggs throughout that provide some well-deserved fan service after the conclusion of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise.
The second season of “I Am Groot” does not reinvent the wheel, nor does it stray too far from the first season, but that’s what makes it great.
There is beauty in the simplicity. So whether you are a die-hard Marvel fan or simply seeking some laughs, season two of “I Am Groot” is a must-watch, and it will leave fans anticipating the next chapter of Groot’s adventures.
The second season of “I Am Groot” Is now available on Disney+.
