“Doctor Who’s” first special “The Star Beast” leaves many questions unanswered, and it appears the show is rehashing tired storylines.
The first episode in the 60th anniversary season of “Doctor Who” aired on Disney+ on Nov. 25, and it revolves around actor David Tennant returning as the 14th doctor. He was previously the 10th doctor.
His return lacks creativity, and some fans may have wanted a brand new character in the role of the 14th doctor. In the 60 years that “Doctor Who” has been around, there has never been a repeat of actors as the doctor.
This also feels like they picked up where they left off when Tennant was the 10th doctor.
The special takes place 15 years after season 4 episode 13, and this context is given at the beginning of the special, but for extra-curious viewers, watching the old episodes might not be a bad idea. The episode can be found on Max.
Tying up Donna Noble’s (Catherine Tate) story is the best description for what this episode tries to do.
Within the plot, inconsistencies can be found in the episode such as the sonic screwdriver situation.
Since the show started in 1963, the sonic screwdriver evolved slowly up until the 13th doctor (Jodie Whittaker), when the TARDIS blew up alongside the screwdriver, causing the doctor to create a new one.
The strangest thing about this episode is that Tennant used the same screwdriver used before the TARDIS blew up, which begs the question — Where did he find it? What happened to Whittaker’s screwdriver?
As for the plot, this episode was incredibly similar to Tennant’s seasons as the tenth doctor. The show fails to incorporate the lore from after his first time as a doctor, and it feels like they just picked up where he left off — ignoring everything that happened in the three doctors between his two regenerations.
Tennant regenerates and ends up in London where he runs into Donna, who is now married and has a child named Rose.
Immediately after the events of Tennant running into Donna, a spaceship crashes in London.
This spaceship carried an alien species called The Meep. The Meep is a cute, fuzzy creature that seems friendly. The best way to describe this creature is gizmo-esque. The Meep reminds me of Gizmo from “Gremlins.”
Tennant will be the doctor for a brief time, as the 15th doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, will debut in a Christmas special.
Gatwa’s era as the doctor will more than likely be the first season to debut on Disney+ instead of Max.
“Doctor Who” can be streamed on Disney+.
