The UCA’s Student Government Association (SGA) met for the final time on April 13 where they would pass four resolutions.
Throughout the meeting, the Senate passed resolutions unanimously recognising various events and individuals.
The first resolution recognized the importance of the UCA basketball team and was sponsored by Senator Drevian Dodson who read out the resolution as the team walked into the senate room lining up the walls next to the calendar.
“University of Central Arkansas Men’s Basketball team demonstrated outstanding dedication, discipline and unity throughout the season,” Dodson read from the resolution. “The team’s commitment to excellence in winning the ASUN Conference Championship, marking the program’s first regular season conference championship since entering the NCAA era over 20 years ago bringing immense pride and recognition to the university and community.”
The resolution also acknowledged the importance of certain members and coaches on the team.
“Cameron Hunter was recognized as the ASUN Player of the Year, a testament to his elite performance,” Dodson said, “and John Shulman, head coach, earned ASUN Coach of the Year Honors, a testament to his outstanding leadership, tireless work ethic and ability to inspire those around him while also laying the foundation for the new standard within the program.”
The resolution was passed by unanimous consent meaning that there was no one who voted against the resolution.
The senators gave the team a standing ovation after resolution was passed.
After the basketball resolution, Senator Jasmine Strickland spoke on behalf of Resolution Ten which had UCA officially recognize Earth Day on April 22.
“The student body supports voices and advocacy, … for [our] environment is a major need to ensure a viable planet for future generations,” Strickland said. “Therefore, be it resolved that the Student Government Association of the University of Central Arkansas celebrates Earth
Day alongside the nation.”
This resolution passed by unanimous consent.
The next resolution was Resolution 11 and focused on the organization Bears Adapt and their Disability Awareness Week.
The resolution was sponsored by Senator Abigail Wells and pushed for the Senate to formally show support for the event.
“The student population has opportunities to deconstruct misconceptions, form a new understanding, and go into their Post Graduate Careers advocating and being educated on cognitive disabilities,” said Wells. “Bears adopt Disability Awareness Week 2026 will provide students with the assurance that student Government supports creating an inclusive campus environment, increasing accessibility standards and curating a culturally competent campus.”
This resolution, like the ones before it passed with unanimous consent.
The last resolution, Resolution Nine, was a unique one.
The resolution recognized the Executive President Kylie McGraw and her many years in the SGA.
This resolution passed by unanimous consent with the executive president a standing ovation for her work.
The resolution was framed with each senator signing the frame.
The Senate did not only pass resolutions, with the Senate hosting the associate vice president for facilities at the physical plant, Kevin Carter who spoke about a new multi-purpose arena that the university will work on.
The reason for the new facility, a few years back, UCA conducted a feasibility study to see how much it would cost to fix Farris Center’s HVAC system; however, the price for fixing the HVAC would cost over ten million dollars, therefore, the university thought it would be better to simply build a new facility.
The facility will face Estes Stadium and will also have more accessibility for disabled students.
The process for the construction may start next summer with Carter estimating the building phase will take anywhere from 18-24 months.
