On Aug. 31, three UCAPD officers arrived at building 8 of Bear Village in response to a noise complaint at approximately 5:03 a.m.
The officers stood outside the window of apartment 804 to watch and listen for any activity within. An officer had to knock and ring the doorbell several times before student Azat Mussin, 22, answered. When he opened the door, all the lights were off.
The officers could smell a strong odor of burning marijuana. They alerted Mussin that they were responding to a noise complaint, to which Mussin responded that he was sorry and “didn’t want to cause any trouble.”
Mussin had to be asked repeatedly before he would turn the lights on. When he did, UCAPD noted that the entire room was filled with hazy smoke.
The officers also noticed empty wine bottles in the trash can and a six-pack of Blue Moon beer on the table.
When asked for his student ID, Mussin responded it was in his car, so he and one officer went to retrieve it.
The remaining two officers advised that everyone come into the living room to speak about the alcohol and drug violations, but the other officer had to go back to the bathroom and to ask again before three individuals unlocked it and came out.
Students Yerik Akhmetov, 19, Beiimbet Sarsekeyev, 20, Akham Makhambetov, 22, Arthur Kim, 22, Mendbayar Turbat, 22, and Altyn Arykbayeva, 20, all admitted to UCAPD that they had been drinking. Akhmetov tried to argue with the officers and told them they had nowhere else to go but Bear Village.
An officer responded that it didn’t matter where Akhmetov was; he was underage and thus it was illegal for him to possess or consume alcohol anywhere. Akhmetov continued to argue with the officers and was said to be smirking at them.
The officers wrote drug and alcohol violations for all students.
Mussin said they were just having fun and that there were not any drugs present, to which UCAPD said that Mussin could speak to the judicial board if he thought he was given a violation in error. Mussin said he would not sign the notice.
Mussin was then arrested for three counts of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor as well as given his judicial board violations.
The officers told the remaining individuals who did not live in Bear Village to call a taxi. A Conway taxi soon arrived to pick them up.
