I’ve entered my last semester of college, and while I’m ready to be past the finish line, I have spent more time lately reflecting on when I was a freshman and new to Conway.
My first semester of college was definitely full of ups and downs. I went through several friend groups, lost some friends, went out more than ever before and made it to (most) of my classes.
I learned plenty during my freshman year of college through my classes and outside the classroom as well.
My number one tip for freshmen is to get out of your dorm/apartment and talk to people. When I lived in Short/Denney Hall, there were events held in the lobby almost daily. Though I didn’t make it to all events, I went to as many as possible. We had movie nights, talent shows and many people would even go downstairs and make dinner together. I made some of my fondest memories in the common area watching episodes of “American Horror Story” each week.
Getting out of your living quarters is important in making connections and building friendships. If you’re in a majority-freshman dorm, chances are you’re all in the same boat and others want to make new friends as well.
I’d tell my freshman self to go to the HPER Center or even go to some on-campus sporting events. After all, we do pay fees for all of this. I went to the gym sometimes, but not nearly as much as I wish I would have. It’s a great gym with a friendly staff, and it’s on campus, which is convenient. There’s really no excuse.
I never once went to a football game during my freshman year, and I regret it. I’d hear how much fun my peers had sitting in the UCA student section or tailgating, and it made me have a fear of missing out. So I suggest freshmen go to at least a few games throughout the season. It’s a great way to feel involved on campus, and to prevent FOMO.
Torreyson Library was my best friend my freshman year. If you’re a first-year at UCA and living on campus, chances are you likely have roommates or noisy neighbors. I’m the type of person who requires total silence when studying or doing homework, and I know I’m not alone.
I advise students to take advantage of the library, especially since it’s open 24 hours most days. I spent long nights in the booths there and was totally unbothered when I needed space and silence. They even have study rooms you can use for group study sessions. I promise the library can be a freshman’s best friend, especially with all the printing you may be doing.
Lastly, I believe everyone, whether they’re a freshman or not, should explore their college town. It’s a great excuse to take a break from campus and schoolwork. Some of my best memories freshman year were in downtown Conway and Beaver Fork Lake. So, get out more!
