Every year the New Year rolls around and many people set goals for themselves.
It is becoming that time of the year when people start to lose their goals.
I believe that many New Year’s resolutions do not stick, and here’s why.
First off, people — including myself — set goals that are way too unrealistic.
For example, there are many people that set fitness goals.
If someone does not go to the gym regularly, then their goal at the start should not be to go to the gym five or six times a week.
They should start with a more attainable goal, like going to the gym two or three times a week.
Another good way to look at goals is to give yourself a weekly or monthly goal rather than a whole year.
It is much easier to plan that way, and it seems more attainable because it is a shorter amount of time.
Also, whenever that week or month is over you can reevaluate and choose what worked and what did not.
Secondly, people give up on their goals way too fast.
Someone sets a goal to read 10 pages every day, then on day six they fail.
It is much easier for them to say, “Well, I already failed, what’s the point in continuing?”
When in reality it doesn’t matter if you just keep your goal for one day, there’s never a loss in counting and trying to grow in yourself and your goals.
Eventually, the consistency of trying over and over and showing up for yourself will pay off, and the goals will become a habit.
Lastly, something you are actively trying to work on needs to be put in your face daily.
If you write down a list of five things you want to do better then put that piece of paper away, you have no obligation to achieve any of those.
if you put them on sticky notes and hang them around your house or set reminders on your phone then you will be more likely to actually work towards it because it will be on your mind constantly.
I used to believe that New Year’s resolutions were scams because if someone wanted to change something they would’ve done it any other day of the year.
Which, don’t get me wrong I still do agree to some extent; but it is good to give yourself a start date and New Year’s is a good time to do so.
A lot of people around you will also be working on themselves.
It’s not the first two or three weeks that’s hard, it’s the weeks and months after when you forget why you chose these goals and when people around you may have already given up.
New Year’s resolutions can work and extremely improve someone’s life, however, many people do not take them seriously, and then get disappointed.
