The UCA Baseball team (13-21, ASUN 4-11) were swept by the Kennesaw State Owls (20-14, ASUN 10-5) on April 12-14 in Kennesaw, Georgia.
The Bears have lost their last three conference series. This is the second straight week UCA has been swept; the first time was against Florida Gulf Coast.
The series’ first game was played April 12, where UCA lost in a close match, 3-2.
The Bears started early in the first inning as junior outfielder Drew Sturgeon grounded out to third but allowed senior catcher/infielder A.J. Mendolia to score a run.
In the second, Mendolia singled to right field, giving freshman outfielder Zeb Allen the opportunity to score, continuing UCA’s lead, 2-0.
Kennesaw State scored its first run at the bottom of the fifth when redshirt junior infielder/outfielder Zac Corbin hit a double, letting junior outfielder Chris Cole score.
The Owls’ last-second comeback came in the bottom of the ninth.
Senior catcher Nick Hassan hit a double, then two batters later graduate student outfielder Spencer Hanson hit a double, allowing Hassan to score and tie the game 2-2.
After letting two more Owls on base with two outs, Kennesaw State walked it off after Zac Corbin hit a single, allowing Hanson to score, winning 3-2.
UCA lost 11-2 in the series’ second game.
The Bears showed hope in the third inning when sophomore outfielder Kade Seldomridge scored a run off of a double from junior infielder/catcher Bryce Cermenelli.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bears slipped up as the Owls scored three runs, taking the lead from UCA, 3-1.
UCA moved forward in the fifth inning when Allen hit his second home run of the year.
The Owls went on to score eight straight runs from the fifth inning to the eighth inning.
Hanson hit a home run in the seventh inning, his fifth of the year, and senior infielder Isaac Bouton hit two home runs in the fifth and eighth innings.
The Owls ended the game in victory, 11-2.
For the final game of the series, UCA lost 11-1.
The Bears started in the first inning with a run from Seldomridge after Mendolia flew out to center field.
In the second inning, Corbin hit a home run to tie the game 1-1. In the third inning, the Owls scored another run.
In the fourth inning, Kennesaw State managed to crack six more runs, continuing the Owls’ lead, 9-1.
UCA allowed two more runs, making the final score 11-1.
The Bears will spend the week at home first playing in-state rival Little Rock Trojans (19-16, Ohio Valley Conference 8-4) in the I-40 Showdown on April 16, then they will go up against the Bellarmine Knights (6-29, ASUN 5-10) on April 19-21.
