The softball Bears outroared the Queens University Lions in a three-game series in Charlotte, North Carolina, scoring a 2-1 victory.
UCA (16-22, ASUN 7-5) began its visit to the Stick Williams Dream Field on April 6, starting the first inning at bat.
Junior infielder Kylie Griffin began for the Bears, striking the ball toward the left field before being caught by an opposing player.
Freshman outfield Renee Christian didn’t fare much better at-bat, grounding out to the third base and giving the Bears their second out.
Looking to change up the game, senior outfielder Tremere Harris singled down the left-field line, becoming the first UCA player to make it to a base. Soon after, Harris managed to advance to second base on a passed ball.
Nonetheless, Harris’ efforts weren’t enough, as sophomore infielder/outfielder Lilly Hood struck out following the run to second.
Queens (16-18, ASUN 3-9) took to home plate at the bottom of the first, failing to make any strides as senior infielder Ashlyn Mickler and junior pitcher Abby Craver both grounded out, while graduate student infielder Kayla Smith fouled out.
The scoring drought continued through the second and third innings.
At the top of the fourth Christian singled to second base, lining herself up for Harris who went on to crack a triple, allowing Christian to score the Bears their first run of the game. Immediately after, Harris was able to score UCA its second run of the afternoon after running to home plate on a pass.
Queens failed to make a mark in the fourth inning but came back in the fifth when Smith hit a home run to right center, scoring runs for both herself and Mickler. The Bears failed to score a run in the fifth, tying the game 2-2.
UCA managed to take back the lead at the top of the sixth as redshirt senior infielder Morgan Nelson doubled to right center. Pinch running for Nelson, freshman infielder Tallulah Pascucci scored the Bears their third run of the game when UCA sophomore outfielder Gracie St. Hilaire reached on a throwing error.
The Bears scooped up the first win of the series, 3-2, after a barren seventh inning.
The second game of the series began only a few minutes later.
Both teams failed to capitalize on the first inning and second inning, neither scoring any runs.
In the third inning, the Bears found a way to push past the Lions.
Sophomore infielder McKayla Betts singled down the left-field line, advancing to third after sophomore infielder Janiah Wilson doubled down the right-field line.
After a strike and an out, Betts scored the Bears their first run of the game, Wilson scoring their second after Harris singled down the left-field line.
Queens continued to remain at zero as neither team scored in the fourth inning.
At the bottom of the fifth Queens junior utility Natalie Windham scored the Lions their first point of the game on a wild pitch. The Bears continued to lead the game, 2-1.
Both teams landed a single hit in the sixth inning but were unable to change the scoreboard.
In the seventh and final inning, Christian, Pascucci and freshman infielder/utility Amiyah Collier. The Bears took home the second win of the series, 5-1.
The final game of the series, held on April 7, put an end to UCA’s winning streak.
The first inning ended without any runs. However, the second inning marked the first time in the series that Queens overtook the Bears.
St. Hilaire scored the Bears the first point of the game, taking the lead until the Queens’ freshman utility Brooke Piper and sophomore first base Lindsey DeRoeck scored two runs off of a home run.
In the third inning, Nelson cracked a home run, scoring a run for her and a run for Harris. The Lions failed to add to the scoreboard, putting the Bears back in the lead, 3-2.
The game’s scoreboard went unchanged in the fourth and fifth innings until Queens tied the game back up in the sixth with a run from junior outfielder Makala Strickland.
In the final inning, the Lions inched past the Bears with a run scored by Smith, giving Queens its only victory of the week, UCA winning the overall series 2-1.
The Bears will go claw-to-claw with the North Alabama Lions (26-13, ASUN 7-5) in a three-game series April 13-14 in Conway, Arkansas.
