Cold weather can be deadly for homeless individuals who often don’t have access to warm clothes and blankets.
Zeta Phi Beta aimed to help change that by holding a donation drive for warm clothes, blankets, and even just scrap material that can be given a second life.
Monetary donations were not accepted. Only physical donations could be given directly to those affected.
The drive was held in the Ronnie Williams Student Center lobby on Feb. 1.
“Our goal is to definitely at least get, since it’s still cold right now, warm sweaters, or maybe sweatshirts and pants that can help to actually cover [donation recipients] up while they’re outside, and even in the shelter where there’s barely any heat,” Jha’rysse Nea, senior Zeta Phi Beta member, said.
“Since we basically just ask for any donations if it’s material that we can make something out of we can use that as well, but if we get anything full like a sweatshirt we’ll give that automatically to somebody,” Neal said. “We’ll just find somebody that can help us make it [using materials], knitting, or whatever it is to get it together and bring that later on.”
Neal described the sorority and its involvement in the community.
“The sorority was founded in 1920 on the principles of scholarship, service and finer womanhood. So in that order, we focus on graduating first and then serving our community,” she said.
Donation drives are not the only thing that Zeta Phi Beta does to serve its community. Recently they volunteered at the Bethlehem House, cooking and serving food.
Zeta Phi Beta is also in charge of clean up for a portion of a highway, and volunteers at food banks and churches in the Conway and Little Rock areas.
Zeta Phi Beta’s next events will be announced soon on its Instagram @ucazetas, and its members will be participating in many Black History Month Events on campus.
