The UCA Volleyball Sugar Bears stumbled and stayed down during the two-day Roadrunner Classic, losing 3-0 against all three opponents Sept. 13-14 at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
The Sugar Bears (1-8) went head-to-head with the hosts of the tournament for the first game Sept. 13.
In the first set against the Roadrunners (4-4), the Sugar Bears had a 5-0 lead until the middle of the match, when the teams took turns scoring points, eventually tying 22-22.
The Sugar Bears lost 23-25 in this set.
In the other two sets of the first game, the Roadrunners continued to pick up momentum, outscoring the Sugar Bears by a handful of points 21-18 and 26-24.
The Sugar Bears faced the Sam Houston University Bearcats (4-5) in their second game of the tournament.
Going claw-to-claw, the Sugar Bears were able to score some points, but not enough to overtake the Bearcats.
In the first set, UCA only scored 12 points, losing 25-12. In the next two sets, more momentum was seen from the Sugar Bears.
In set two, the Sugar Bears and the Bearcats sat at a 20-20 standstill until the Bearcats successfully pulled off a 5-0 run, leaving the second set at 25-20.
The Sugar Bears remained in the lead for the majority of the third set, sitting at 17-12, but the Bearcats overtook the lead, ultimately winning the last set 25-22.
In the final game Sept. 14, the Sugar Bears faced the University of Alabama Crimson Tide volleyball team.
In the first set, Alabama started the first set strong with a 6-1 lead. The Sugar Bears began to bounce back, gaining an 11-9 lead.
Alabama came back with a 10-4 run, and the Sugar Bears responded with a slight lead 21-20.
However, the Crimson Tide was able to overtake the first set, ultimately winning 25-22.
The other two sets of the final game saw similar plays and results.
In the second set, Central Arkansas and Alabama stayed close point-wise, taking turns scoring throughout the game. As the minutes ticked down, the Crimson Tide overtook the court, taking out the Sugar Bears 25-21.
The final set saw both the Sugar Bears and the Crimson Tide scoring points, staying in a 3-point margin for the majority of the game.
However, Alabama was able to build a 5-point lead at 22-17.
The Sugar Bears were then able to pull off a 6-0 run, putting the set at 24-24.
Central Arkansas and Alabama began to trade off 1-point leads.
Despite the Sugar Bears’ efforts, the Crimson Tide flooded the courts once again, ultimately winning 32-30.
In the game against the Crimson Tide, freshman outside hitter Regan Harp made 17 kills, a career record for her.
