The track team set three school records at its meet at Arkansas State in Jonesboro Jan. 27-28. The men’s team also placed first in two events. The Bears competed in nine events on the first day. Juniors Jasmine Ellis and Megan Snow both finished in the top five in the women’s pentathlon, Ellis finishing in third and Snow in fourth. Ellis finished in the high jump with a jump of 1.59 meters. She also finished fifth in both the 55-meter hurdles and shot put. Snow finished third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.53 seconds. She finished third in both the long jump and shot put. On the men’s side of the first day, junior pole vaulter Daniel Reese finished fourth with a vault of 4.75 meters. Senior Jaron Criswell finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.98 meters. He was the top finisher for the Bears in that event. The men fared better on the second day, winning both the 400 meter dash and the 4×400 meter relay. Freshman sprinter Chance Tanner won the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.69 seconds. Senior Sage Raphael and freshman Kelton Ray also finished in the top four of the event. Raphael finished third with a time of 49.93 seconds, and Ray finished fourth with a time of 50.06 seconds. Tanner, Raphael and Ray were also part of the 4×400-meter relay win, along with senior sprinter Demarcus Harrison. The group’s time of 3:18.94 broke the previous school record of 3:19.81. Senior James Anderson finished second in the high jump with a jump of 2.08 meters, tying a school record in the process. Sophomore sprinter Tanesha Maxwell broke her own school record in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.10 seconds. Her previous record time was 7.19 seconds. Maxwell finished in third place in the event. Maxwell broke her own school record again in the 200-meter dash. She beat her old record of 25.89 seconds, with a time of 25.48 seconds on Saturday. The track team will compete again this weekend in Carbondale, Ill. at the Southern Illinois Invitational.
•The Bears football team will hold a reception today at 3 p.m. for National Signing Day in the Hall of Fame Room at Estes Stadium. Mid-season transfers Jacoby Walker and Austin Haywood will both be present at the reception. The team is expected to sign 20 to 22 players today. The reception is free to the public.
•The tennis team will travel to Texas this weekend for matches against the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks and the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday. The Bears lost to both teams last season. The Mavericks defeated the Bears 7-0 last season, as did the Islanders. The Bears are currently 1-0 after winning their first match against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, 4-3.
