The Black History Month Vision Board Program: Connecting the Dots from the Past to the Present
The Delta Sigma Theta sorority kicked off both Black History Month and Jabberwock Week with a quiet yet inspirational virtual event on Monday night via Zoom.
Jabberwock week is something the entire sorority puts on where the chapter and others can “observe artistic expression like the Vision Board Program,” along with exploring other “arts, and music” throughout the week, said Ashley Mackey, Chapter President of Delta Sigma Theta.
The Black History Month Vision Board Program: Connecting the Dots from the Past to the Present was put on by the Deltas, and was made virtual due to the pandemic.
Mackey said this was the second year that the Vision Board Program happened, but was held virtually for the first time this semester.
In hopes for a great new year, vision boards can be a helpful tool to stay on track with life goals.
Ideas for the boards included things like the Black Lives Matter movement, 4.0 GPA, travel, and self care.
During the event on Monday, participants were invited to create their own vision board for 2021 on Canva.
The event took place at 7:13 p.m. and was posted on the Delta Sigma Theta instagram page, @uca_deltas.
Taylor Sylvester, Treasurer of Delta Sigma Theta, opened the program with a game of Black History Month themed Kahoot! and ice breakers.
In the game, historical people of color like Mae C. Jemison, Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, and Ida B. Wells were discussed, along with fun facts about everyone who answered correctly.
Participants were then guided by Sylvester onto Canva, where we made our own vision boards for free.
Music requests were taken and creativity flowed as we all worked on our individual boards at home.
Many students discussed both personal and academic goals, or simply to “do the right thing,” said Hannah Chavis.
Yasmin Morris shared her vision board on Zoom with goals like “use a planner” and a “4.0 GPA.”
Memories and travel aspirations were a big hit on the boards too, with hopes that it would be safe to travel again soon.
Malone’s vision board was ideal for a college student, with friends, and family.
“I added a Black Lives Matter poster because I’ll always advocate for what I believe in,” Sophomore Hannah Malone said. “The saxophone represents my goal of playing more music. The money is there because I want to always be where the money resides.”
Other students discussed goals dealing with networking, broadening horizons in the new year;
income, gaining more or remaining constant with money; health, mental and physical; and much more.
“The main focus of my board was growth and focus. Last year was chaotic, so I hope I can get back into doing the things I enjoy like music, be dedicated to my work, and take care of myself physically & mentally,” said Malone.
Malone attended the Program after she saw the post on Instagram, thinking it would be a nice getaway from class.
I participated and was able to make my own vision board for the year, through the help of Sylvester’s Canva knowledge.
The Delta Sigma Theta sorority has multiple events scheduled for Jabberwock week, all taking place on Zoom.
