A passion for creating art and enthusiasm for photography in high school eventually led to an interest in film making for 20-year-old junior Emma Scribner.
“I realized in high school that I really enjoyed working behind a camera,” Scribner said, “It all started out as a hobby, so why not turn a hobby into a career.”
Scribner started at UCA in the fall of 2019 with a declared major in film and a minor in art. As a Maumelle native, UCA was the right fit for Scribner.
“UCA is only a 30-minute drive from my house, which is great because I knew that I wanted to live at home when I started college,” Scribner said. “Plus, I also had family members and friends attend, so I knew UCA was a good school.”
The Torreyson library is one of Scribner’s favorite places on campus.
“I usually have breaks between classes, and since I don’t live on campus, the library is a great place to chill,” Scribner said, “Having a Starbucks there is also a plus.”
For some students deciding where to work after college isn’t always the easiest choice – though some have a plan in mind, like Scribner.
“After college, I plan to work for a local production company for a couple of years and then to make a move to California to work,” Scriber said, “Immediately after college, I’ll probably end up getting a job as a production assistant since that is the industry’s entry-level position.”
“Being a director of photography is what I find most interesting,” Scribner added, “I envision myself working on movie sets and behind the camera.”
As an avid photographer and future filmmaker, Scribner is a friend who is always ready to capture the moment for keepsake.
“In my free time, I like to hang out with friends and take pictures,” Scribner said, “I have a film camera on me at all times, so it’s always fun getting out and capturing memories.”
When not spending time with her friends, Scribner enjoys spending time at home binge-watching tv shows. “I just finished Atypical and just started The White Lotus,” Scribner said, “Definitely recommend watching The White Lotus.”
It’s safe to assume that all filmmakers have opinions on movies and directors. “It’s hard for me to pick a favorite director, but I like Tim Burton,” Scribner said, “I grew up watching his movies, so they are nostalgic in a way – Edward Scissorhands would be my favorite of his films, but Beetlejuice is a close second.”
Film majors are often asked the notorious favorite movie question. A question that is not always so easy to answer. “It is literally impossible for me to pick a favorite movie, but I do really like Booksmart,” Scribner said, “The cast is phenomenal, and Olivia Wilde directs it.”
Scribner describes herself as someone not really into the horror genre but branched out this summer and watched Netflix’s Fear Street Trilogy. “I’ve been watching the Fear Street movies, and they have been interesting,” Scribner said, “I haven’t finished the last one in the trilogy, but I liked part two (1978) more than part one (1994).
