The UCA Korean Club held a game night Thursday, Nov. 17, in Irby Hall.
The game night included the opportunity to play a variety of traditional Korean games. Club members provided chips, popcorn, drinks and goody bags that matched the Korean theme.
The club also indulged in K-pop music videos on a projector that was connected to a few speakers. Hyjo “Alice” Kim, the club’s president, said the origin of the game night came from her own experience at other organizations’ game nights.
While the game night was about having fun, the club also wants attendees to take away more knowledge about Korean culture.
“I am not sure of the organization, but I went to a different kind of event and they also did a game night and I thought this is fun, and let’s try this, and now we have a game night,” Kim said.
This type of event is a change of pace for the club. Typically, events for the club entail regular meetings where they discuss Korean traditions. Other typical events for the club are movie nights.
Kim said that game nights allow attendees to experience traditional Korean games when they usually would not be able to.
Most people reserved their spots but some came without a reservation, which was OK for her and the club.
Vice President Sabrina Martin said seeing the diversity really inspires her to be a part of the club and help run these types of events.
“I’m from a really small town in Poinsett County and they have no representation of anything here … So coming here and seeing all the diversity was really amazing,” Martin said. “I know a lot about Korea, so I thought if I know something about this maybe I could join this club and help other people learn about it. I thought that was interesting.”
For any student that is on the fence about checking the club out, Kim said, “No pressure, you can come anytime. We will have a lot of fun. It is open to everybody that goes to UCA.”
