Sara Martinez graduated from UCA in the fall of 2020 with a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education K-6.
During Martinez’s time at UCA, she was part of many organizations such as the student orientation staff, Alpha Sigma Alpha, The Purple Society, and many others.
“I loved every minute of getting to be part of something bigger than myself. I’m thankful for every leadership role,” Martinez said.
Although her first year of transitioning to her new home in Conway was rough, Martinez is still very grateful for her experience at UCA.
“I made many memories and grew in all aspects of life. I loved that UCA was big enough that I could meet new people, but still small enough where I could make a name for myself and not just be another student,” Martinez said.
Martinez was born into an immigrant family and a big extended one as well in Little Rock.
Her family taught her the importance and value of hard work. Because of that, Martinez was able to graduate from UCA a semester early.
Martinez said, “Because of my hard work, I was able to graduate a semester early. I have achieved the American dream and I am now a first generation, young Mexican/Nicaraguan American woman that has a college degree.”
Now that summer break is coming to an end, internships are wrapping up. Rising seniors are now eagerly awaiting their final year at UCA.
Martinez said, “Make school a priority, but don’t overdo it. Spend time with your friends and create memories. You’re not going to remember the test you had to study for, but will remember your experiences.
“Another thing, make time for yourself. Your mental health should be your top priority,” Martinez said.
As one says, all good things must come to an end. Martinez explained that her years at UCA were one of the best decisions that she has ever made and that she is thankful for the school and the friends she has made along the way.
Martinez said, “UCA has given me more than I could ever give in return. It has given me opportunities, leadership, confidence, lessons, education, strength, memories, and more.”
After Martinez’s time at UCA, she is now a 4th-grade elementary school teacher for Eastside Elementary in Greenbrier.
She believes UCA has prepared her for the career she is in by informing her on the current curriculum and tools and by providing internships as well.
“The University of Central Arkansas has, if not the best, one of the best teacher preparatory programs. UCA used to be a school specifically for teachers, so they have had a long history of perfecting their program,” Martinez said.
This will be her second year teaching starting in August.
Besides teaching, she enjoys listening to music, singing, traveling, painting, hammocking, and reading.
Martinez says she describes herself as someone who doesn’t fit into one box but instead, fits into many.
