The UCA women’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss against Austin Peay State University in its match on April 6.
The Governors (8-11, ASUN 4-3) headed into the game with an early lead, with doubles victories against the Bears (9-12, ASUN 2-5) on courts two and three.
Junior Nanoka Kazma and sophomore Harune Shigemasu lost to junior Sophia Baranov and sophomore Luca Bohlen 3-6 on court two and Ting-An Chen and Nanami Fukushima lost to Asia Fontana and Elena Thiel 3-6 on court three.
In the court one double set, junior Vichitraporn Vimuktananda and junior Konomi Miyakawa were in the lead 5-4 against senior Denise Torrealba and senior Tu-Hua Cheng before their match was left unfinished.
The Bears were able to claim singles victories on courts three and five, but the Governors took four single courts, ultimately winning the match.
Junior Konomi Miyakawa defeated Fontana 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, on court three and Chen defeated Thiel 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 on court five.
Vimuktananda lost to Baranov 6-7 (8-10), 1-6 in a competitive set on court one, Kazma lost to Torrealba 4-6, 2-6 on court two, Shigemasu lost to Bohlen 1-6, 2-6 on court four, and freshman Minyoung Park lost to Cheng 1-6, 6-4, 0-6 on court six.
Kazma, Shigemasu, and sophomore Seohyun Park all dropped their respective matches as well.
In tennis history between the Bears and the Governors, the Bears have gathered two wins and six losses, with the longest winning streak being one match and the longest losing streak being three matches.
The last time the Bears defeated the Governors was in 2022 with a major 6-1 win. Prior to that match, the Bears won 4-3 in 2018.
The Bears will face the Queens University of Charlotte on April 11 and Eastern Kentucky University on April 13 to wrap up their season.
The UCA tennis team has only competed against Queens one other time in 2024, where it pulled out a major 6-1 victory.
The Bears have triumphed over the Eastern Kentucky University tennis team in the only two matches against them, with a 5-2 win in 2024 and a 6-1 win in 2023.
