Members of Panhellenic Council sororities and Interfraternity Council fraternities came together for the lively annual tradition of the Spring Queen pageant April 16.
Beta Upsilon Chi’s representative, freshman Mia Crafton, was crowned spring queen.
“I think that Greek organizations can work together and just host more events that are encouraging the Greek community, such as more philanthropy events,” Crafton said. “Philanthropy events are a good way to connect with others, but it’s also an amazing way to raise money, and just work for the community and get that to people with us.”
Hosted by Sigma Tau Gamma, and sponsored by Sissy’s Log Cabin, the pageant featured three rounds: the introduction round, the talent round and the formal round.
Each sorority from the Panhellenic Council had a representative competing in the pageant in addition to the Pi Kappa Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Beta Upsilon Chi fraternities.
In the introduction round, participants performed an introductory dance alongside background dancers from their respective sorority and affiliated fraternity.
Sophomore Sydney Wonnacott participated as a background dancer for freshman Maddie Krumbach’s act.
“I love to dance with my friends,” Wonnacott said. “So any opportunity I get to do that I kind of take advantage of.”
Each act had a distinct popular culture theme that was depicted in the introduction and talent rounds.
Freshman Ryan Sorbet, who represented Alpha Sigma Alpha, won the introduction round with her group’s Duck Dynasty-themed performance.
In the talent round, each group kept its theme from the introduction round. Performances revolved around each contestant’s talents in the area of performing arts.
The talent round was won by freshman Ashlyn Boudreaux, who represented Alpha Sigma Tau and whose group performed a rendition of a Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders act.
In the formal round, participants wore formal dresses and each answered a question that was randomly drawn out of a bowl by the hosts. The topics of the questions ranged from school spirit to involvement in Greek life on campus.
Freshman Maddie Krumbach, who represented Delta Zeta, won the formal round.
Krumbach said that joining Delta Zeta opened many opportunities for her about which she otherwise would not have known, and that she has received support from her fellow sorority members in her endeavors over her first year at UCA.
“If I had never joined Delta Zeta, first of all, I wouldn’t be on this stage,” Krumbach said. “I also wouldn’t have known about the Relay for Life organization and I also wouldn’t have had my [sorority] sisters supporting me when they told me I should interview for the Student Orientation Staff. I did end up making staff, but I would have never been there if I didn’t have the support from my community behind me. They just have honored me in that way and made me feel supported in anything that I [have] wanted to do.”
The Spring Queen pageant also featured two overall awards: the people’s choice award and spring queen.
The people’s choice award was determined by the money raised for each contestant, which was collected through the Sigma Tau Gamma CashApp.
Freshman Ava Hudnall, who represented Sigma Phi Epsilon won the people’s choice award.
