Alpha Sigma Alpha hosted You’re Such a Charm for girls interested in spring recruitment to learn more about its sorority Jan. 29.
Girls got to meet members and learn about the sorority’s values and philanthropy.
They did this while making charm bracelets, they also had a hot chocolate bar.
“In the spring, UCA Panhellenic sororities have what’s known as ‘COB recruitment’ which is basically just a fancy way of saying a more casual recruitment process. We have our typical structured process in the fall, similar to the infamous ‘bama rush’ but much less extreme. Spring recruitment is a super relaxed process for girls to know and be known more personally. I love these events because I love to meet people and talk about the house and people that built me,” said junior and Vice President of Recruitment Kennedy Holland.
Spring recruitment is a way that each sorority gets to meet new girls; this is an opportunity for members as well as girls interested in recruitment.
“I’m so excited for spring recruitment for so many reasons. Meeting new people brings me so much joy and I absolutely adore Alpha Sig, so combining the two is my cup of tea. Spring recruitment also means new members which makes me ecstatic. My priority during recruitment is to make sure girls find the place they belong, but it brings me great joy when Alpha Sig is their place,” Holland said.
Joining a sorority can look a little different for each member, whether this is through the fall, spring, or being a transfer student.
Sophomore Luci Banks rushed in the Spring of 2024, so she knows how it feels to go through Spring Recruitment.
“My most memorable part of my recruitment experience was when I went to the recruitment events, we made vision boards. Everyone wanted to talk to me and I felt so seen and loved,”
Banks said.
Holland had an experience that was ‘nontraditional’ as well.
“I joined Alpha Sig as a sophomore transfer student in the fall of 2023,” she said. “I’ve been a member for a year and a half now. Sometimes it feels like a month and other times it feels like I’ve known these girls my whole life.”
Recruitment can be a scary thing to go through, but many of the members in the sororities want to be there for potential new members to help them throughout the way.
“To any potential new members or girls even remotely interested in a sorority — be where your feet are. This is a weird process and you’re making a decision that could change the trajectory of your life! Being present in the moment with the people physically around you is so important. There’s a common misconception that when you find your “forever home” you’ll feel these big emotions and instantly know. That does happen, but it’s not the case for everyone. Don’t make an emotional decision based on what other people are telling you — do what you want to do and go where you want to go,” Holland said.
