The UCA women’s soccer team clawed through Eastern Kentucky’s defense in a dominant first half, but a second-half goal left the Bears growling in a 1-0 road loss.
Central Arkansas (3-5, 0-2 ASUN) outshot Eastern Kentucky 28-19 in Friday’s Sept. 26 game, including 19 first-half attempts with 13 on frame.
Despite the Colonels’ aggressive pressure in the opening minutes, which earned them two shots, UCA quickly flipped the momentum and pushed its defense forward to take control offensively.
An eighth-minute shot from junior midfielder Megan Moudy set the tone for the Bears, who controlled possession and dictated the tempo throughout the first half. Senior forward Brianna Lopez forced a save shortly after, and UCA continued to build rhythm through the midfield, connecting passes and stretching the Colonels’ back line.
Even though the Bears maintained composure and control of the game, they couldn’t capitalize on their chances, leaving the field scoreless at halftime. Eastern Kentucky broke through in the 58th minute, slipping a shot past the UCA back line and into the bottom corner, taking advantage in a match that had felt just inches away from a UCA win.
The Bears nearly responded seconds later when Moudy fired a shot off the kickoff, but the Colonels’ goalkeeper smothered the chance. UCA continued to press, launching five more shots in the next 10 minutes, including a near-equalizer from sophomore forward Kayla Hurley that struck the post.
Hurley led the team with six shots, and every attacking player registered at least one attempt. The Bears maintained pressure until the final whistle, throwing numbers forward in search of an equalizer, but Eastern Kentucky’s defense wouldn’t budge.
“Kayla had a really good game and was dangerous going forward,” head coach Jeremy Nichols said. “She was inches away from changing the outcome.”
Nichols praised the team’s offensive output, calling it their most aggressive showing of the season.
“We created more chances in that game than we have all year,” Nichols said. “We hit the post, the goalkeeper made huge saves, and we just barely missed the target on chances we normally put away.”
Lopez said the team’s attacking rhythm reflected their preparation throughout the week.
“We’ve been focusing on improving our final pass in the attacking third, and it really showed today,” Lopez said. “We outshot the other team and did a great job connecting from the defensive line all the way to the offensive line.”
She also credited practice for sharpening her confidence and consistency in front of the goal.
“We spent a lot of time focusing on the small details during training, which made a big difference when it was time to perform,” she said. “I felt ready and composed going into the game.”
Defensively, UCA held Eastern Kentucky to limited chances. Despite the loss, Nichols emphasized the team’s overall effort and balance across the field.
“It was a good performance by everyone,” he said. “Our defense slowed down a pretty good attacking team, and our attacking players created chances all game long.”
The Bears bounced back with a 3-1 win over Bellarmine on Sunday, Sept. 28, to close out their road stretch.
