The Indianapolis Colts had a dominant victory over the Las Vegas Raiders 40-6 on Oct. 5, but would receive unfortunate news about kicker Spencer Shrader.
Spencer Shrader will be out for the rest of the 2025 season after a knee injury occurred during an extra-point attempt during the second quarter.
The injury was determined to be an ACL and MCL tear, sidelining him on the sideline for the rest of the season.
Raiders safety Tristan McCollum collided into Shraders’ right knee after the kick.
McCollum was flagged for roughing the kicker and the Colts were forced to attempt two-point conversions for the remainder of the game.
McCollum has been fined $5,722 by the NFL for hitting Shrader – creating the collision that would ultimately cause the season-ending injury.
After the game, Head of the Colts Shane Steichen says that the whole team felt for the kicker.
“Just disappointed for him, he was having a hell of a season. We’ll be with him to support him through this time,” Steichen said.
“Its going to be very difficult to replace a guy like that and when you do have a great kicker, it definitely eases your mind,” Steichen said. “He was lights out for us. AFC special teams player of the month and a tremendous talent, just a very unfortunate situation.”
Shrader had started off the season to a great start in his very first season in the NFL through five games.
The number of field goals that were made was 13 of 14 through five games and made each of the 14 extra point attempts.
There were many of Shraders’ teammates who expressed their disappointment and gratitude for Shrader.
Long Snapper Luke Rhodes and Linebacker Zhaire Franklin expressed their feelings about the injury to Shrader.
“It’s hard to celebrate because we lost our guy. In the moment, you keep going. Now, we can reflect on it and just think about it for a day or two, and whomever we bring in, we’ll just have to really get up to speed and continue the momentum that Spencer started,” Rhodes said.
“Devastated about Spence going down, devastated”, Franklin said.
Due to the injury, the Colts have gone out and signed veteran kicker Michael Badgley to the roster for the rest of the season.
As the Colts try to move forward with Badgley becoming the kicker, Shrader’s absence will be missed in big games.
The clutch timing and reliability of Shrader helped the special teams unit of the Colts become one of the best special team units in the NFL.
Shrader made a post to Instagram to show gratitude to his teammates and fans in the Colts organization.
“Grateful for every moment with this team, what a journey it’s been already. Sometimes that path forward looks different than we planned but the mission stays the same. Through it all, the Lord is faithful. Thank you for all of the support, I couldn’t be more blessed,”said Shrader.
