The Student Activities Board is one of the many groups that students can get involved with on campus.
According to the Board’s CubConnect, their main goal is “to encourage, support and implement co-curricular activities that facilitate growth and development of students.”
SAB sponsors numerous diverse programs and activities that offer students a way to “learn through different experiences.”
SAB’s CubConnect says that it wants programs and activities that are sponsored through the Office of Student Activities to “foster leadership, social interaction/networking, public service and a sense of mattering and belonging,” and that it hopes that through its programs students are given ways that they can contribute to their communities.
SAB hosted an event called Talk About It Tuesday on October 21st from 11 a.m to 2:30p.m.
It opened up its office in the Ronnie Williams Student Center and offered free popcorn to students in order to get them to come in to interact with SAB leaders.
Preslee Galloway, president of SAB, said, “The goal of this event is to promote our exec board to students mostly as people, to get them to know the space a little bit more and to get them to know us each on a more personal level. And obviously free popcorn is a great incentive.”
Claire Zimmerman, human relations head of SAB, said that this event serves as a way to “humanize the exec board.”
Zimmerman said, “Being able to build [connections with the exec board] is really crucial when it comes to figuring out who is going to represent us.”
Another purpose of this event was to advertise SAB’s Fall Fest, which took place on Monday October 27, from noon to 6 p.m in the TREC parking lot. This event was put on to kick off homecoming week.
Zimmerman said “We’re super excited… Imagine your local fair, we’re kinda going to bring that to that big old parking lot out there. There will be free food, free activities… We’re just trying to promote that, get the word out. Again, we’re just super excited to be able to put that on for the students at UCA.”
Galloway said, “SAB brings an entire carnival to that parking lot. [We’re] super excited about it, it’s a really, really big event for us. We’re giving out free tote bags, there’s like 300 of them… everything’s free. We’re going to have boba, food, activities, carnival rides.”
If students are wanting to get involved with the Student Activities Board, Galloway said, “The best thing to do is just reach out and show up. General member meetings are on the first Thursday of every month during X period, those are the best way. But if people can’t make that… just stopping by our office when somebody is in and talking to us. The more we get to know someone, the easier it is to build that connection, and when exec board applications come out in the spring for the next year it’s much easier to make those decisions when we know someone personally.”
