The annual Greek life flag football tournament was held at the rec field and was hosted by the Student Mobilization group (StuMo) Aug. 26.
This event encouraged community engagement with UCA campus life and included the organizations Fishers of Men, Sigma Tau Gamma, Sigma Epsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha, and one independent team filled with members who were not tied to any organization.
Throughout the games, many of the players expressed a deep connection and support for each other as brothers, potential pledges and friends as they all played in order to win the trophy that is given to the winning fraternity.
“It gets me closer with the guys. Builds a relationship with all of them,” freshman business major Cullen Rogers said. “I get to enjoy some football with my boys.”
Blake Perry, a member of the StuMo team, expressed similar feelings.
“The focus of this event is to allow students to connect and get to know other students on campus,” Perry said.
This was reinforced by the crowd, who supported their friends and fellow teammates through encouragement and massive turnouts as they watched the competition in the middle between two makeshift flag football fields.
StuMo is a group that primarily focuses on colleges and connecting students to a Christian-based faith.
The Ozark chapter of StuMo is held within the states of Arkansas and Missouri, as the three colleges it is involved with include the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Missouri State University and the University of Central Arkansas.
On its website, StuMo states that the organization is focused on developing the characteristics of Leadership, Character and Faith.
StuMo states that its purpose is “to build spiritual leaders for Christ from the college campuses of the world.”
Each game was twenty minutes long and had players try to rip flags off the opposing team members’ waists if they had the ball.
In the event of a tie, both teams would try to make it into the endzone from the 10-yard line.
The trophy had a model of a football being elevated on top by a pedestal with the engraving of the previous winners on the bottom with a plastic base.
This year, the winning cup went to Pi Kappa Alpha – who went undefeated, also won in 2023. The fraternity also had a second team participate, who also went undefeated.
The runners up, Sigma Tau Gamma who, like Pi Kappa Alpha, also had two teams but had one knocked out in the first bracket and were beaten by Pi Kappa Alpha 14-0 in the final match.
When Pi Kappa Alpha had beaten Sigma Tau Gamma, both Pi Kappa Alpha teams lined up to take photos with the bracket poster and winning cup where they then chanted a passionate song about their fraternity.
