To usher in the new year, Sigma Iota Alpha hosted a stress-free night full of painting and fun. Make a Mug was a hit among students, with over 40 people filling up Ronnie Williams Student Center room 223 to paint a mug.
“Especially after getting snowed in, we wanted this to be a social event for people to get out. Just a nice, fun event and it looks like it had a good turnout.” sophomore and co-treasurer Marina Beltran said.
Junior Baylee Davis agreed the event was a great way to help students unwind.
“I think it does definitely serve as a de-stressor,” Davis said.
SIA provided students the choice of white or clear mugs to paint, and all the supplies necessary to paint them.
“I go to all the painting stuff, like anything that says painting. It gives me something to do other than homework,” junior Lexi Hull said.
Cindy Ledezma Alanis, recruitment chair, said events like this can help with campus connections and recruitment for those interested in joining SIA.
“This was our first social event of the semester, and I’m really thankful for them hosting this event because we’ve had a really good turnout,” Ledezma Alanis said. “We got a lot of interest from our group, and hopefully, after this event, we build connections for our future events. And recruitment-wise, we’ll invite those interested to our next social, it’s going to be a bit more private so we can have one-on-one. But really we just want to have a good atmosphere and positive vibes at our events.”
Freshman Elena Montalvo showed interest in joining Sigma Iota Alpha.
“I went to some of their events last semester and they were really fun, so I’ve definitely thought about trying to join,” Montalvo said.
As for upcoming events, SIA is hosting Director’s Cut on Feb. 29.
Senior Anacaren Ramos, social chair, gave a preview of the event.
“The Director’s Cut event is going to be highlighting Latin directors, their films, and what they did for some of the photography,” Ramos said. “So we’re going to watch different cuts of films and discuss them. It’s more of an educational event than just bringing more cultural awareness to life communities.”
