The UCA softball team continued its winning streak with a three-game series against Florida Gulf Coast University, soaring past the Eagles with a 3-0 win.
Although the Bears won all three games, it was the first game that remained the crown jewel of the entire series.
Winning 10-1, UCA scored a total of three home runs, one each from redshirt junior infielder Morgan Nelson, sophomore infielder Kylie Griffin and redshirt junior infielder Madi Young.
Florida Gulf Coast wasted its first inning with two strikeouts as well as a fly ball to right field.
The Bears’ Junior outfielder Tremere Harris began the bottom of the first with a single to the middle, advancing to second while Griffin grounded out.
Young locked in first base with a walk as Nelson cracked the first home run of the game, sending both her, Young and Harris to home plate, beginning the game at 3-0.
Florida Gulf Coast seemed to begin to make progress when senior catcher Neely Peterson walked to first, but the Bears quickly shut down the Eagles.
UCA continued to dominate the field at the bottom of the second.
Junior infielder Josie Willingham began the inning with a walk to first, slowly advancing her way to third base.
After redshirt junior outfielder Jenna Wildeman grounded out to the third base, Harris singled down the middle, stealing second shortly after.
Griffin took to the plate, grabbing the Bears’ second home run of the night, and adding another three points to the board.
The Eagles made their first hit of the night at the top of the third when freshman outfielder Emily Chiarella singled to shortstop, only for the next two players to be struck and grounded out.
The Bears returned to scoring runs at the bottom of the fourth, with both Harris and Griffin scoring once again.
Florida Gulf Coast snagged its first run of the night at the top of the fifth.
Chiarella opened the fifth with a triple to right field, finally creating an opening for the Eagles.
Although no other Eagles were able to land a successful hit during the fifth, Chiarella was able to grab a run when sophomore outfielder Avery Viancos grounded out to the second base.
The first game came to a close at the bottom of the sixth when the Bears took the final two runs of the game.
Not long after Griffin singled up the middle Young slammed the Bears’ third home run, sending both her and Griffin home, ending the game with a score of 10-1.
While UCA also took the victory over the second game, the opponents seemed to be far closer than before.
Similarly to the first game, the Bears scored the first run at the bottom of the first.
Harris began the inning with a walk, advancing to second when Griffin grounded out to the third base.
Once Young singled up the middle, Harris ran past third to home plate, securing a point for the Bears.
Despite remaining scoreless at the top of the second, the Eagles’ senior right-handed pitcher/outfielder Riley Oakes was able to make it to third base, not moving any further after freshman shortstop Tiffany Meek struck out.
Florida Gulf Coast finally surpassed the Bears for the first time in the series at the top of the third.
Although Viancos made it all the way to second on a pitching error and graduate infielder Tayli Filla made it to first on a walk, the pair gave the Eagles the boost that they needed.
Following a single to right field by sophomore shortstop Kayleigh Roper, both Viancos and Filla scored a run on a fielding error, giving the Eagles the upper hand with a score of 2-1.
The Bears tied the scoreboard at the bottom of the fifth when Wildeman scored her first run of the series.
UCA ended the second game with one last run from Harris, both winning the game and proving herself to be a major piece for the Bears.
The third and final game of the series began rather slowly in comparison to the previous two games, the scoreboard remaining dry until the bottom of the third.
Harris opened the Bears’ turn at the plate with a single to the pitcher.
Griffin grounded out soon after but allowed Harris to rush second base.
Harris continued to conquer, taking over third base when Young singled up the middle.
Young quickly stole second before Nelson walked to first.
Harris finally ran home after a fly ball infield, Young grabbing a point of her own when freshman utility Colleen Bare doubled to center field.
Wildeman scored her second run of the series at the bottom of the fourth, pushing the Bears forward with a score of 3-0.
The Bears snatched up their final run of the game at the bottom of the fifth with a home run by redshirt junior infielder Mary Kate Brown.
The game seemed to be a steal for UCA until the Eagles rose from the grave at the bottom of the seventh, collecting a total of three runs.
The feat wasn’t enough to bring the Eagles a win. The Bears grabbed the victory of the game and the series as a whole.
The Bears can next be found at bat in Louisville, Kentucky against Bellarmine in a three-game series on April 15 and 16.
