Students for the Propagation of Black Culture didn’t let Friday the 13th scare them out of having a good time.
SPBC’s “Friday the 13th: Fright Night” invited students to dress up in costumes or their favorite spooky pajamas and enjoy a night of playing games and dancing at the Ronnie Williams Student Center Amphitheater.
At the event, students played Connect 4, Jenga or a bowling match. A game of hide-and-seek also broke out once the sun had gone down.
During the night, SPBC president Jeromy Hunt, who was dressed up as Fat Albert, started singing and dancing to the Fat Albert theme song for the crowd.
Sophomore pre-nursing major Jasmine Parker said that one thing she enjoyed about Fright Night was the music: “I feel like that’s what got the vibes going today.”
Parker said she came with Jakira Davis, SPBC’s sergeant-at-arms.
“I was actually just contemplating going to my room after class and [Davis] was like ‘Oh no, don’t forget we got something going on today’ and I was like, ‘OK, I won’t go be a hermit in my room,’” Parker said.
Freshman chemistry major Jeniah Black said, “We came out and we could listen to music and jam out and play different games. I enjoyed getting together with different people and just chilling.”
Freshman psychology majors Kamryn Scott and Kayla Stamps said that they enjoyed getting to play hide-and-seek and watching people dance at Fright Night.
Scott and Stamps said that they hid behind Ferguson Chapel, behind the Old Main wall and at one point, behind a tree.
Scott and Stamps said they come to almost every event that SPBC hosts. The last one they attended was SPBC’s Sip and Paint.
Despite Halloween still being a week out, Fright Night allowed students to get into the Halloween spirit.
Parker said that for Halloween she has plans in the works to go to a haunted house. She also plans to either dress up as Velma from “Scooby-Doo” or one of the kids from “Codename: Kids Next Door.”
Black said she was probably going to go to parties for Halloween and that she planned to dress up as a sci-fi agent or a fairy.
Scott and Stamps plan to go to parties for Halloween but are not sure what they want to dress up as.
Stamps said, “If worse comes to worst, I might end up being a vampire.”
Scott said, “I’ll probably end up being a black cat.”
Stamps said that for Halloween her family likes to buy candy for the house and watch Halloween movies together. Her favorite Halloween movie is “Addams Family Values.”
At the end of the event, SPBC handed out bags of candy with cards that read “Vote for Jakira Davis.”
SPBC nominated and sponsored Davis as the 2023 UCA Homecoming Queen.
Scott said that her favorite Halloween candy is the Halloween-edition orange KitKat, and Stamps said she prefers Twizzlers.
Parker said, “I really love sour Trollis, but here lately, I love a Reese’s … any type of holiday edition Reese’s, not a plain one.”
Black said, “I really like Swedish Fish because you can’t really find them in stores.”
