Conway Hall staff kick-started the Christmas season by serving hot chocolate with all the fixings to their residents on Thursday, Nov. 30.
Residents were asked to bring their own mugs, although there were cups available to those who didn’t have any.
The cold rain outside helped to make for a nice night in, enticing residents to stay in the lobby downstairs for a showing of “Elf.”
“Being here eases my mind and takes me away from my mind being so overworked from studying. It allows me to relax and escape that studying world to be more at ease,” freshman Nikea Watson said. “‘Home Alone’ is my favorite Christmas movie, I’ve never watched ‘Elf’ so this is something new to watch, but it looks really fun.”
Peer coach Bryce Overman created the event and hoped that students would take advantage of the resources available to them in Conway Hall.
“Well you know, we got the Purple Profile results, and one of the main issues our residents struggled with was the residence hall environment — which is like using the spaces and different stuff in the hall. So, I was hoping to get some people down into the lobby and kitchen areas of the hall to experience them,” Overman said.
As students swung by to get a warm cocoa, it brought to life a few classic debates, such as milk or water in hot cocoa.
Freshman Emily Collins said, “Hot cocoa was the deciding factor in me coming down here, it’s the Christmas drink, no doubt about it. I use milk, which I think they should’ve, and I always add whipped cream.”
Sophomores Serene Miam (left) and La'Tavia Banks (right) hold up their decadent hot chocolate.
One student even turned down the hot chocolate because it wasn’t made with milk, but others, such as freshman Dakota Perdue, appreciated the water-based approach.
“I really like hot chocolate, and I don’t add extras. Hot take, I like it better with water than with milk,” Perdue said.
Another source of disagreement was over which Christmas movie was best, and while “Elf” was playing only one person considered it their favorite.
Sophomore Jasmine Jones said, “‘Elf’ is my favorite Christmas movie, and then ‘Polar Express’ is second.”
“The Polar Express,” usually regarded as a cult favorite, was not so kindly received by others.
Overman said, “I personally don’t like ‘The Polar Express.’”
Others went classic with their pick of Christmas movies.
Collins said, “My favorite Christmas movie is ‘Frosty the Snowman.’ It just hits the spot.”
Perdue said, “‘Elf’ is a great movie, I love Blue Film Movies, but my favorite Christmas movie is probably ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.’”
