The Bears basketball team defeated the Nicholls State Colonels 99-76 on Jan. 18 at the Farris Center.
It marked the Bears second conference victory of the season.
Junior guard Robert Crawford and sophomore guard LaQuentin Miles both led the Bears in scoring with 19 points. Crawford’s 19 points was a career-high for him.
The Bears had a total of five players score in double figures. The Bears shot 40.9 percent from the field and 28 percent from three-point range.
The win improved the Bears’ record to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play heading into their matchup against the Lamar Cardinals on Jan. 21.
•The Sugar Bears basketball team came back from a seventeen-point deficit to beat the Nicholls State Colonels, 66-59, on Jan. 18 in Thibodaux, La.
The Sugar Bears trailed 39-23 at the half. The Sugar Bears went 0-8 from beyond the three-point line in the first half.
The Sugar Bears improved in the second half, hitting 5-12 from the three-point range and going 14-15 from the free throw line. The Sugar Bears outscored the Colonels 43-20 in the second half.
Junior guard Micah Rice was a big part of the Sugar Bears comeback, who scored all 16 of her points in the second half.
The Sugar Bears’ win improved their record to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play heading into their game against the Lamar Lady Cardinals.
•The Bears’ track team competed in the Missouri Southern Invitational on Friday and Saturday, tying or breaking three school records.
Sophomore distance runner Erika Setzler set a new school record in the 5,000 meter run, finishing second with a time of 18:50.15. Her time broke the previous record-time of 19:41.83.
Sophomore sprinter Tanesha Maxwell tied her own record in the 60 meter run, with a time of 7.77 seconds, which was good enough to win the event.
Junior pole vaulter McKinley Rea also tied her own record, vaulting 3.4 meters. Rea finished second in the event.
Senior hurdler Demarcus Harrison was the only winner for the Bears on the men’s side at the meet.
Harrison won the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.38 seconds.
The Bears will compete this Saturday in Jonesboro at the Arkansas State Invitational.
•The UCA tennis team opened its season with a 4-3 win over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs on Saturday.
It was the first win for coach Jeff Borengasser, who was hired last June.
The Bears and Bulldogs split the singles’ games, but the Bears were able to win all three doubles games to win the match.
The Bears’ next match is Tuesday Jan. 31 in North Little Rock against the UALR Trojans. The match starts at 9 a.m.
