The Sugar Bears went home with a victory on Wednesday after a close game against Southeastern Louisiana. This 60-54 win left the Sugar Bears with a record of 4-10 overall and 2-4 in conference games.
Taking home the win did not come easy as the Sugar Bears fought against an impressive offense until the last quarter.
Scoring 19 points with 7 rebounds, junior forward Lucy Ibeh. Ibeh remains one of the team’s leades in points. Ibeh is the team’s leader in field goal makes in this game with 8-13. Ibeh remains one of the team’s leaders in points. Ibeh is second in points-per-game at 11.7 per game.
Another leader in points was senior guard Savanna Walker. Walker scored 12 points and made almost every free throw shot she took, going ⅚ at the line. When asked how she felt about her personal success Wednesday night, Walker said, “Honestly, I’m just happy we came out with the win. It took each and every one of us tonight.”
The Lions fought a hard battle against the Sugar Bears, taking the lead in the first and fourth quarters.
Commenting on the Sugar Bears’ defense, Walker said, “Overall we had a few hiccups here and there but the good outweighed the bad and we were able to make stops when we needed them most.”
Lions senior guard-forward Morgan Carrier was one of the biggest challenges the Sugar Bears had to face, she scored 25 points with a field goal percentage of 80%. It was because of the Sugar Bears’ determined defense that they were able to hold Carrier off and walk away with the win.
This wasn’t the first time the Sugar Bears have won against the Lions. Their last matchup was in March of 2020 where the Sugar Bears had a 54-47 win.
Head coach Rushing said to UCA Sports, “I’m really proud of our effort! I thought we really played hard. We needed to pull out a tight ballgame like this to show that we can win. We outrebounded them, that’s good. I really liked how hard we played defense tonight. We’re starting to figure out how to win. This was a great teaching moment for us. We beat a very talented and athletic team.”
The Sugar Bears will play tonight at 7 p.m on the road against New Orleans. New Orleans has a 4-8 record but will be a tough game for the Sugar Bears since this game will be in New Orleans. At home, New Orleans has a 4-1 record.
